Kerry gaffe loses independents for his party
The Washington Times ^ | November 7, 2006 | Donald Lambro

Sen. John Kerry's gaffe that Americans who do not do well in school end up in Iraq has triggered deep doubts among some independent voters about voting Democratic in the elections, according to a new Pew poll.

The poll found that 18 percent of independent voters -- considered pivotal in today's congressional elections -- said they had "serious doubts about voting for a Democratic candidate" because of Mr. Kerry's comments last week.

For most of this year, polls have shown independent voters supporting Democrats by lopsided margins, but yesterday's Pew poll said the Republicans "have made major gains, in a relatively short time period, among independent voters."

Democrats now lead Republicans among independents by 44 percent to 33 percent, compared with 47 percent to 29 percent in mid-October, according to Pew's poll of 2,369 registered voters Wednesday through Saturday.

In a speech to students at Pasadena City College in California last week, Mr. Kerry said, "You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

The Massachusetts liberal's remark was seen by critics and fellow Democrats as demeaning the educational levels of U.S. service members. It forced him to cancel all of his campaign appearances after apologizing for comments he called "a botched joke" about President Bush's intelligence.

Kerry was stuffed and gagged. The Democrats know that Big Mouth of his probably scotched everything they hoped to win today. If the much-heralded Blue Wave doesn't materialize, they'll blame him for the party's failure to win back Congress.

I don't usually follow polls, but I saw one last night that had Joe Lieberman ahead of Lamont and his other challengers. There was nothing to indicate what the numbers were before the Kerry insults, but I wonder how much influence those words may have had on that race.

Exactly. Kerry is a Godsend to them- an excuse that the reason they weren't elected has to do with anything other than voters despising their positions.

And in believing that Kerry is the reason for their loss they will continue to remain the same and lose again in '08!

And the Blame Game begins.

They will blame Kerry, rain, Diebold machines, Rove, etc.

They will not address the ills of the party itself.

One thing I find so disturbing about this post is that the "independents" could be so swayed by a statement that was nothing new.

Its not the first time Kerry has attacked the military.

Its not the first time the DEMS have attacked the military.

This simply tells me that independents and "moderates" have no sense and are easily swayed.

These kinds of things need to lose more than independents. People who have been voting Democrat for generations (because their parents did, or because their unions tell them to) need to step back and take a look at what Democrats really stand for.

re: They will not address the ills of the party itself

As frustrating as it is to hear them blaming everyone but themselves I think it's a pretty fair trade since it means they will go on applying solutions to the wrong problem! Heaven forbid they should come to grips with the real problem and possibly swerve into a solution for it. I know it takes a lot of courage to make it through a campaign season with all their silly braying, but in the end the joke is always on them. I love it.

I could be wrong and be counting my chicks before the eggs hatch, but if history is any indication they will come up short again after the REAL poll results are released over the next few days.

They sure do remind me of the Roadrunner and Wiley Coyote!

It tells me that the media sweeps Dem gaffes under the rug so the independents don't see them.
