Threat Matrix: November 2006

Posted on 11/01/2006 8:20:24 PM PST by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
The Price of Victory
-Full Story-

The "bombshell" revelation from last April's National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which was leaked to the New York Times in September, was that the war in Iraq had resulted in more terrorism, not less. As reported by United Press International's Claude Salhani, "Did we really need 16 intelligence agencies to tell us that? Ten minutes of watching the newscast of your choice, from Al-Jazeera to Fox News, would be enough to convince most observers." But the key question is why the war has provoked the global Jihad.

One answer has to be the influence in the Arab world of the America-
hating network Al-Jazeera
. The AIM DVD on "Terror Television" shows film footage of captured terrorists saying they came to Iraq to kill Americans because of the words and images on Al-Jazeera.

You are always welcome, Cindy.

BTW, I took the last of my yellow roses in; there are a few scattered buds and I hope they also will bloom so I can enjoy them as well before December!

Belive it or not, my other flowers are still hanging in there admirably (except for the impatiens).

So, are you pulling up any slush in your neck of the woods yet while you dream of weeding again next year?

French Jews Attacked After HaPoel Tel Aviv Beats French Team
Arutz 7 ^ | Nov 26, '06 | Ezra HaLevi

Posted on 11/26/2006 12:26:17 PM PST by Nachum

A Jewish fan of the HaPoel Tel Aviv soccer team was attacked by French fans in Paris Thursday, resulting in a police shooting that left one dead and one injured.

The incident took place at 11 PM at a McDonald’s restaurant near Paris’s Parc des Princes stadium following Tel Aviv’s 4-2 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in a UEFA Cup match.

Paris fans attacked four French Jewish fans after members of the mob identified them as “Jews”. The Jews fled in different directions and a mob formed chasing after one of them, Yaniv Hazout.

A plain-clothes policeman tossed tear gas grenades in an attempt to disperse the mob and eventual fired two live bullets into the crowd, “after being driven into the corner,” according to the French police.

Two French rioters were injured by the shooting. One, 24-year-old Julien Quemener, later died of his wounds.

Initial reports indicated that the attacked fans were Israelis who came to France to support the Israeli team. It turned out, though, that the attacked fans were local French Jews who came out in support of the Israeli team. Israeli fans were actually kept in the stadium for more than an hour after the game to prevent them from becoming targets of the angry mob, after they insisted on coming onto the field to celebrate the victory.

The spokesman for Hapoel Tel Aviv, Amir Lubin, told Army Radio that French fans were extremely hostile toward the Israelis who came to support their team. "We could hear the chants of the French crowd, which were in no way connected to soccer," he said. "It was obvious that the Paris supporters were enraged by the result of the game, but we didn't imagine it would come to this," he said.

French prosecutors have opened an inquiry into the incident, and placed the officer who fired the shots, Antoine Granomort, in police custody.

Witnesses told police that the Paris fans were shouting “filthy Jews” and other anti-Semitic slogans at the Jewish fans and would have truly killed them had Granomort, an immigrant from the Caribbean, not fired into the crowd.

French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy said many of the Paris fans were chanting “Death to the Jews” during the attack. Five fans are in police custody and may face charges of racism and anti-Semitism.

Coalition Kills 26 Insurgents in Iraq, Aids Anbar Tribe

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Nov. 26, 2006 – Coalition forces conducted several operations yesterday that resulted in the deaths of 26 insurgents, and supported an Iraqi tribe under attack by al Qaeda today, military officials in Iraq announced.

Al Qaeda terrorists attacked the Abu Soda tribe in Sofia today, officials reported. After establishing positive identification, coalition forces conducted air strikes and fired artillery at al Qaeda forces in support of the tribe.

The insurgents attacked through a tribal area checkpoint and engaged the Abu Soda, burning homes and killing tribe members using small-arms fire and mortars. Both al Qaeda and the Abu Soda suffered casualties, although the exact numbers are unknown, officials said.

No coalition or Iraqi security forces casualties were reported, officials reported.

In other action today in Iraq, coalition forces operating near Baqubah engaged and killed four armed terrorists and detained 11 suspected terrorists during a raid that targeted individuals associated with al Qaeda.

A weapons cache containing a mortar system, rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns, AK-47 assault rifles and fragmentation grenades was discovered when troops searched the area, officials said. The weapons were destroyed on site.

One of the 11 terrorists detained was hiding in a house dressed as a woman, pretending to nurse a baby, officials reported.

North of Baghdad yesterday, coalition forces killed 12 terrorists traveling in three vehicles.

The troops were en route to detain one suspected terrorist associated with manufacturing car bombs and helping foreign fighters enter area, and found him traveling with 11 associates, officials said.

As coalition forces approached the vehicles, the 12 armed terrorists ignored warning shots and attempted to maneuver on the ground force. Coalition forces engaged the vehicles, killing all of the terrorists, officials said.

In three simultaneous raids near Taji yesterday, coalition forces killed 10 other terrorists after taking small-arms fire and conducted an air strike on a bomb-making factory, officials reported.

During the exchange of fire, a pregnant woman and a teenage man were injured. Both were treated on the scene and then evacuated to coalition medical facilities for additional treatment. The man died shortly after arriving at the hospital. The woman was treated for minor injuries and is expected to be released today, officials said.

After the fighting, coalition forces conducted a thorough search of the target area and discovered significant weapons caches. Included in those caches were rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns, anti-aircraft weapons, pipe bombs and detonation cord. Coalition aircraft destroyed the caches.

Elsewhere in Iraq, soldiers from the 6th Iraqi Army Division conducted a patrol in Hurriya on Nov. 24 in response to media reports that four mosques were being burned in retaliation for car-bomb attacks in Sadr City the previous day.

The soldiers found the al Muhaimen mosque intact with no evidence of any fire at the location.

While investigating the al Meshaheda mosque, the patrol took small-arms fire from insurgents. The patrol returned fire, and the insurgents fled the area. A subsequent check of the mosque found it intact, with no evidence of a fire, officials said.

About two hours after the operation began, a local civilian told the patrol that armed insurgents had thrown a gas container into the al Nidaa mosque, setting it on fire. The patrol pursued the insurgents, but lost contact with them.

The local fire department was called and extinguished the fire shortly after it was reported. The mosque’s entry way sustained smoke and fire damage.

An alleged attack on a fourth mosque remains unconfirmed, military officials said. The patrol also was unable to confirm media reports that six Sunni civilians were allegedly dragged out of prayers and burned to death Nov. 24. Neither Baghdad police nor coalition forces have reports of any such incident.

In Khalidiyah yesterday, an insurgent suicide car-bomber killed two children, one adult civilian and one coalition servicemember at a vehicle checkpoint northwest of the city, officials reported. The car-bomber also was killed in the explosion.

Nine civilians and a coalition servicemember also were injured in the attack. The civilians were taken to an Iraqi medical facility in Fallujah.

Residents of Khalidiyah also alerted Iraqi leaders of a bomb in a local building and requested coalition help in defusing it yesterday. When that effort failed, precision artillery fire was used to destroy the building.

Nearby residents were temporarily evacuated from the area to ensure their safety.

Russian forces kill 'Al-Qaeda leader' in Dagestan
The News ^ | 26 Nov 2006 | Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman

Posted on 11/26/2006 4:44:29 PM PST by csvset

MAKHACHKALA: Russian forces killed five people including a Jordanian described as an Al-Qaeda leader when shooting broke out at a house in the Caspian province of Dagestan, security sources said.

The clash occurred as forces from Russia's interior ministry and the FSB security service conducted a check on a house in the town of Khasavyurt, an official from the ministry's branch in Dagestan, near the restive province of Chechnya, told journalists at the scene.

"Firing came from the house at 6:00 am (0300 GMT) and the building was surrounded. A special operation was begun to destroy the attackers. It lasted from 6:00 am until 10:00 am," the official said.

One of the five killed was Jordanian fighter Abu-Khavs, a leading Al-Qaeda representative in the Russian Caucasus, the deputy head of the FSB's Dagestan branch Mikhail Merkulov said on national television.

The other dead were three accomplices and the owner of the house, the interior ministry official said.

Abu-Khavs was a Jordanian citizen born in 1973, whose real name was Farid Yusef Umeira, the FSB said in a statement released in Makhachkala, the regional capital of Dagestan.

He "coordinated terrorist activities by foreign mercenaries, illegal armed groups and religious extremists and oversaw the provision of money and equipment received from foreign terrorist and extremist structures," it said.

The statement claimed Abu-Khavs was the "successor" to two other figures allegedly linked to Al-Qaeda and to anti-Russian violence in the region: Abu Al-Walid and a commander known as Khattab, both of whom have been killed in recent years.

The daily Vremia Novostey cited Russian intelligence services claiming that Abu-Khavs financed the bloody 2004 hostage-taking by Chechen separatists at a school in the Russian town of Beslan, in which 332 people died, many of them children.

The pro-Chechen news website Kavkazcenter.com published comments dated November 10 from Abu-Khavs in which he talked of young people joining jihad, or holy war, in the Caucasus region. The interview was accompanied by pictures of him in military clothing.

Russian media have since 2004 linked him to the Al-Qaeda terrorism network and to fighters in Chechnya.

The Rossiya television channel showed the bodies of the five men laid out amid the wreckage of the still-burning building following Sunday's operation.

The killing of Abu-Khavs was hailed by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov as a major success for the security forces.

MOGADISHU, Somalia: The Islamic militia that controls much of southern Somalia dispatched thousands of troops Sunday to within 15 kilometers (9 miles) of the border with Ethiopia amid increasing fears that tensions between the two sides could explode into violence.

"All our troops in the region are now ready at the front lines to face their enemy," said Mohamed Mohamud Agaweine, the military commander for the Council of Islamic Courts in central Somalia. He said thousands of Islamic fighters were in the region around Abud-waq, but did not give an exact figure.

Security alert at Philippines airports
25/11/2006

The Philippine government has alerted immigration and security personnel against the possible entry of foreign terrorists.

The alert was raised in the wake of a call for jihad made this month by the Indonesian spiritual leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah, Abu Bakr Bashir, against the United States and its allies. The Philippines has been supporting the U.S.-led global campaign against terrorism. Shirley Escalante reports Justice Secretary Raul Gonzales has ordered the strict monitoring of airlines and foreign visitors.

The Justice Department has received intelligence reports that four international airlines are being used for human trafficking to Manila by emissaries of Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.
