Kenyan paper says Islamist letters led to US alert
Monday 27 November 2006

(NAIROBI) — A U.S. warning of possible suicide attacks in Kenya and Ethiopia was prompted by the discovery of two letters signed by Somalia’s most influential hardline Islamist leader, a Kenyan newspaper said on Sunday.

Washington issued its warning to U.S. citizens on Nov. 2, in response to what it said were "terrorist threats emanating from extremist elements within Somalia". But a State Department spokesman gave no details on how those threats were presented.

The Sunday Nation newspaper said it had obtained two letters purportedly signed by Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, who appears on U.S. and U.N. terrorism lists, but it could not establish the authenticity of the documents.

Israel developing bionic hornet weapon

Snip: Israel is using nanotechnology to try to create a robot no bigger than a hornet that would be able to chase, photograph and kill its targets, an Israeli newspaper reported on Friday.

The flying robot, nicknamed the "bionic hornet," would be able to navigate its way down narrow alleyways to target otherwise unreachable enemies such as rocket launchers, the daily Yedioth Ahronoth said.

Silly string helping to save lives of troops

Snip: It may seem odd, but Silly String is helping to save the lives of soldiers in Iraq and one local community is making a big effort to ship it overseas. Among the dangers faced by the military fighting in Iraq are booby traps.

Nearly invisible wires trip the explosions, but soldiers and marines have found Silly String is one way to spot the sinister mechanism without setting off the trigger.

How Bin Laden's master spy penetrated the CIA

Snip: But, Amy, mysteriously he was able to get past the US watch list. And one of his former CO at Fort Bragg told me he believed that he had had help from the CIA getting into America. On the plane on the way in, a TWA flight, he met a woman from California who was coming back from Greece on vacation, about ten years older than him. And six weeks later, they were married at a drive-through wedding chapel in Reno, Nevada. He is now living in Santa Clara in her condo in the middle of, you know, the high-tech heartland, and eventually enlists in the US Army, as you said, goes in as an enlisted man, because I believe that, you know, OCS, Officer Candidate School, would have subjected him to greater scrutiny.

But in any event, he ends up at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare School at Fort Bragg, which is the heart of the advanced training for Delta Force and the Greet Berets. And his CO, Colonel Anderson, told us, he said it would be easier to win the power ball lottery than to be in the unit that murdered Anwar Sadat and get past the watch list and end up at the SWC, they call it.
