Rights group files complaint against Borat

A HUMAN rights group campaigning for gypsies has filed a complaint against British comic Sacha Baron Cohen over his film featuring a spoof Kazakh journalist who calls himself a former "gypsy catcher", German prosecutors said today.

The state prosecutor's office in the northern city of Hamburg said the European Centre for Antiziganism Research had brought the complaint accusing Cohen of slander, inciting violence against the Sinti and Roma gypsy groups and violating Germany's anti-discrimination law.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan premiered last week in London and is due to hit German cinemas tomorrow.

Twentieth Century Fox, the film's distributor in Germany, pulled television commercials and internet advertising that featured tongue-in-cheek talks of running over "gypsies" with a Hummer military vehicle after complaints by the group.

Borat is one of the great comic creations around.

Not that anyone ever said 'human rights activists' have a sense of humour...

On the other hand, Roma and Sinti were hunted down like animals by the Nazis.

Even in recent times government officials in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and various other FYR entities have sought to abuse Gypsies.

Even the EU as a whole has sought to restrict population movements from states with large Gypsy populations to other parts of the EU.

I don't recall having come across Khazakistan being particularly anti-Gypsy, so possibly this Borat character should have his resume revised. Now if he were a Czech, it'd be much more believable.

After watching his SNL intro piece, I think I've seen all I need to. He's funny but 90 minutes is more than I need. I knew I'd seen all I need to when he brought out the giant ball of "pubis", good for scrubbing things and indicated that is was harvested from just 3 Kazakstan women.

Saw Borat on Letterman this week and the whole schtick rang through as more non-sequitr than clever. Problem was the Letterman was "in" on the joke and wouldn't engage, "argue with the idiot." Cohen just came off as mean, not a cultural rube fresh of the wilderness of his home country.

Seems like Letterman learned a bit from the O'Reilly treatment.

"ball of "pubis", good for scrubbing things and indicated that is was harvested from just 3 Kazakstan women."

Is that all this is? Sounds like Howard stern on steroids.

"Howard stern on steroids."

Not a bad analogy from what I saw. The movie might be different but I don't think I'll chance the $$$.

the European Centre for Antiziganism Research

For WHAT research??? That sounds like something that could have been invented by "Borat" in furtherance of his act.

antizigianism: a grass-roots social movement to bring down the regime of bald, round-headed, no-necked, comic strip characters with really big feet.

"The movie might be different but I don't think I'll chance the $$$."

I dont even see anything funny on the trailers really.

Yeah - when the hype is on a higher level than the quality of the trailer, the red flags go up for me.

The more people complain about this movie, the more I want to see it.

"...accusing Cohen of slander, inciting violence against the Sinti and Roma gypsy groups and violating Germany's anti-discrimination law..."

How has the "violence been incited," when the movie didn't even open yet? I mean, is this suit filed over a trailer playing in Germany?

Apparently, hurt feelings = incited violence (at least that's how a liberal mindset could twist it).
