Surprise gift

George Bush and Dick Cheney have been working overtime (and racking up air miles) to rally conservative stalwarts in the final days before the elections, and on Monday they got a gift from an unexpected source: John Kerry.
As the president was telling the good people of Texas that the Democrats did not want to win in Iraq, his former rival was in California insulting the troops.
Or so Mr Bush and his spokesman would have us believe. And when you review Mr Kerrys comment, its hard to argue:
"You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq," he said, eliciting chuckles from the students.
The president demanded an apology, and some furious military bloggers also pounced, calling Mr Kerry a disgrace.
Senator Kerry came out swinging in response, saying he had botched a joke aimed at the president - and that he would apologise to no-one for his criticism. But his tough talk reminded me of an old political maxim: If you're explaining, you're losing.
John Kerry clearly thinks he is going to run for president again in 2008. If he doesnt have jokes funnier than this, he's going to lose again. And in the meantime, he's not doing his party any favours this year.

Brit Hume just asked him panel if this would have any effect on the elections next week..
Mort Kondrake said NO>..but it sure would hurt Kerry's chances of running for POTUS again...
Naturally it SHOULD to the second...but I am praying that the MEDIA doesn't just let this go.
If Sissy Chrissy Matthews can get 3 weeks worth of "dirt" out of the Foley thing...this should be able to last on week.
Thanks, I couldn't remember what stupid remark he made but it happened in my State and sickened me. I despised John Kerry in the 70's for a myriad of reasons, I think less of him today. He left his fellow veterans high and dry.
"Let's talk about education." And then as an aside, he reminds them that if they don't get an education they will end up in Iraq.
Seems pretty darn clear to me. Yes, he said, "Let's talk about education." Not, and by the way, "Let's talk about the president."
That's a good objective take on the situation.
In no way can Kerry's words be construed to mean anything other than an insult to U.S. troops.
I understand you feel strongly about this, but I think you are wrong and here is why.
If indeed it was a botched joke then Kerry should have said : "If it was misinterpreted by our Vets and troops, I am sorry."
Instead hecame it was all about him, how the GOP attacked him, how he, a VET, would never attack troops or vets (a lie, he forgot he has been there, done that)
It was all about Kerry and not about how a botched joke could have unintentionally been misinterpreted.
IOW, overkill.
Freeping the poll will show outrage about Kerry's Comments. Forcing Kerry to apologize for his comments will not give him a pass.
Hey dead, didn't you do this one?
Just your RESIGNATION!
I dont see how that comment could be taken as a stab at Pres Bush, especially when he mentions the troops in Iraq not being good or smart enought to go to a college/unniversity.
Understand what your saying but it becomes tiring that everyone is apologizing for everything. This is disgraceful and he should not get off with a forced apology.
Pray for W and Our Troops

Well said, my friend!
Heehee,I have a stupid 4th ID granddaughter also with her stupid boyfriend-4 ID.I can't wait to tell them about this:)
I think dead did that.
Oh, that was delicious. Thanks, MadIvan.
so did Bush finally say something like 'This is the same creep that came back from Vietnam and dissed his fellow military brothers with horrible lies while they were still in harms way...now aren't you glad this pathetic creep isn't attempting to lead our military (that he clearly has no respect for) thru this dark and significant period in our country's history and future."
Did he say anything like that? Guess I'm just hopin'
