Write-in Could Win Delay's Spot, Poll Finds.
Houston Chronicle ^ | 10-29-2006 | Doug Miller

On Monday President Bush flies into Houston to campaign for a congressional candidate who — at one point — looked like a long shot.

But an exclusive poll indicates that Shelley Sekula-Gibbs may pull off a political upset and win her write-in campaign for Congress.

I find it bogus that write-in candidates must be qualified by a certain date and then voters have to "dial in" the names one letter at a time.

There is no "writing in" when you are DIALING IN. The term is bogus and it is purely punative to all legal write in candidates to require going through the mechanics of spelling out the name one letter at a time. Have an "a/b/c" choice of all legally qualifying "write-in" candidates.

She'll win...I know if I still lived in that district I'd have to hold my nose to vote for her. She's way too moderate.

I voted in The Meadows this past Saturday. Judging by the time people were taking, it seemed as if everyone was writing her in. The names of write-ins are posted, so the spelling should not be a problem. There were a couple of volunteers outside the polling place to explain to people what to do. We talked about the difficuly of her keeping "Sekula" in her name. apparently, she was well-known as a doctor under her own name before she got married, and did not want her patients to lose track of her.

Lampson has done of LOT of advertising. I originally thought he'd win in a walk, and would be able to save his war chest for a couple of years, but it looks like he's blowing through it now. The only thing that troubles me is that he has the NRA endorsement, even though the NRA gave Shelley an 'A' rating.

However, that may be because I'm a Republican voter with a perfect attendance record at the polls.

That's all it will take to win this race.

Yeah, this seat went from *the dems. have done everything they can to steal this seat, including bogus court rulings* to *WTF, she's gonna win this DESPITE the democrat grenade they launched*. My only prayer is that Republican women just say no to the hyphen. What a circle jerk this created, yes because of the ridiculous court rulings, but also because of the never*-*ending last name.

Looks like this gal will win. I remember your predictions a few months back.

Don't like the smoking ban which was pushed through without voter approval.

But better to keep the House out of the hands of the Democrats and to keep this from being a symbolic victory for the Dems.

I don't live in the district so I don't have a vote. Some had suggested Paul Bettencourt but I think he does a great job where he is (including purging illegal voters from the voter registration rolls, he has discussed his methods of cross-referencing on the radio).

City elections in TX are called "special elections" and have runoffs. But regular general elections in November of even years do not have runoffs.

Her name is one nightmare, however, it's been stated IF someone only wrote GIBBS it'd be accepted.

Wonder how much longer the "NRA" will be credible. I say this because Michael Moore has joked with getting a lot of libs to become voting members to hijack the politics of the organization from within.

And if anything needs to be done about campaign finance, it is to restrict out of state donations to these candidates in Texas. Why should Hollyweird be able to alter OUR political landscape? They are out of the state and out of the district. They are ineligible to vote in this election.

In fact, there's a reason for her name. She already had a reputation in the medical community when she married, and didn't want people to think she had disappeared.

I believe there are a few circumstances where a woman might be wise to keep her own name. If I had a lucrative business that depended on my name, I'm not sure that I wouldn't have hyphenated my name, as well.

What happens if someone writes in GIBBS or SEKULA or misspells SEKULA-GIBBS? How much leeway is there? I'd rather know that before the election rather than after the election. If they can divine voter intent from a partial punch of paper card (hanging chad) then "GIBBS" ought to be enough to divine intent in this case. Hell, "Gobs" ought to be good enough. But it is a different state.

YEP, as hard as the dems tried to steal this election...it didn't happen and will not happen. Lampson is one unhappy camper. ;o)

There's more than the smoking ban...she had a huge hand in what you can and can't ask illegals. She's way to soft on the illegal issue.

"The only race in question is in Evansville, with a popular local sherriff running as a VERY Conservative Democ"

Most pundits are counting Hostettler out, even though he's done nothing to deserve getting bounced, he's a great Rep.

Ellsworth is *running* conservative,
Yeah, but he will vote for Pelosi as speaker... and she is a leftwing kook:

http://freedomstruth.blogspot.com/2006/10/left-wing-pol-to-become-speaker.html

so to beat Ellsworth, defend Hostettler record, and tie Ellsworth to Pelosi's record is the answer.

Your comments on other races is encouraging.

Do you or anyone have a link to what will be accepted as a valid write-in?

"You are presumably a hyper-committed voter who has evidently waited for months to vote for Shelley Sekula-Gibbs and yet you nonetheless misspell her first name."

LOL I misspelled her name in my post! How funny!

Seriously, the good thing is that her name was written on a page right above the key-pad. I probably got it correct when I voted. Also, the important people who run the elections said that the applicable law is the intent of the voter, and close spellings should be enough to demonstrate intent. What happens when they count votes if the election is close? I predict we may be held up in the courts for some time.
