U.S. Senate candidate James H. Webb Jr. faced more criticism yesterday about his characterizations of women, when critics publicized excerpts of his novels, including graphic sexual passages involving women and children.
"There is nothing that's been in any of my novels that has not been illuminating of the surroundings, or defining a character or moving a plot," said Mr. Webb, a Democrat. "I'm a serious writer."
Andrea Lafferty, executive director of the Traditional Values Coalition, said she was "sickened" by what she had read.
"Democrat or Republican, an individual like that belongs on the couch of a therapist, not on the floor of the United States Senate," she said.
Laura MacLeod, another woman in the Virginia coalition, said she will take Mr. Webb's novel "Lost Soldiers" to "every ballet practice and every soccer game" until the Nov. 7 election.
Mr. Webb's writings started appearing on conservative blog sites as early as Oct. 16, but were not picked up by the press until Thursday night, which prompted the coalition to hold a press conference yesterday outside Mr. Webb's office in Arlington.
The passages come from five of Mr. Webb's wartime novels, starting with "Fields of Fire" in 1978. The excerpts include pedophilia, acrobatic young strippers and the homosexual behavior of guards at a prison in Vietnam.

The fact that Webb writes such disgusting sentences in his novels makes me wonder just what sort of degenerate he is.

Just because you didn't hear about it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. As a journalist Web might have been looking for things you were not. As a counselor I have run into some pretty terrible stuff right here in the good old USA. For example a young man, now died of AIDS, whose brothers used the family dog to violate him sexually; a man, now dead, sexually abused by a mother who tried to drown him in the toilet when at the age of 6 he began to defy her; a woman violated at the age of 2 by her father, and as a teen by her brothers and their friends; a man who as a 13 year old was used by his father after his mother was gone.
As for the woman in the article who was so shocked by these stories. What, if anything, is her organization doing to help the millions of African teenage girls who are forced to undergo female circumcism without anesthesia or sterile cutting instruments.
What are you, a freakin' DUmpster?
Webb could have written about heroes, freedom-fighters, God, love, faith, technology, optimism, sports, finance.
He choose to write about penis-sucking fathers.
By opening your mouth in support of Webb, you richly deserve how he would choose to insert his gratitude.
Senator Allen is thus assured of re-election, and I am willing to bet he will be the Next President of The United States.
I have lived in Bangkok since 1992 and have been visiting here since 1976. Webb did not see any such thing anywhere in Thailand. It is not a cultural thing. It is a sicko thing. The Thais are, on the surface, some of the most conservative people on the planet in public. He did not see it here.
My brother, a devout and dedicated liberal, has been tap dancing on this since it came out. He tried to tell me that it was part of Thai culture to abuse their sons in this manner. My response was simple - he is no expert and I asked him which part of Thai culture he was referring to. Was it the Chinese-Thai culture which my wife and my wife's family (and my family) a part of? He dare not insult my family. Was it the Lao-Thai or the Khmer-Thai culture of Northeast Thailand where family values are extremely strong and community living is standard? Maybe he thinks it was the majority Siam-Thai culture which respects and adores children as a matter of Thai values? What culture, I asked? What culture? This behavior is as unacceptable here as it is everywhere else except in the minds of the moral relative liberals in the United States.
Webb made it up either from his own childhood or his own personal life. No such thing exists here where he would see it openly and in public. He is, as one so aptly put it a very "sick puppy!"

I heard a news report earlier today that says an organization from the country he was writing about responded publicly that this was a custom of respect between the father and son in that country. If you ever study a course in cultural anthropology, you will discover that there are many amazing and shocking things happening in the world that we in this country would not approve of or would find absolutely horrible. On the other hand, we do things in this country in public, like bakini (sp?) bathing, boys and girls kissing, that are shocking to people in some other countries.
Are there any more debates with these two?

Having not seen the original, do you know if Web said this was done in public, or was it in a small private ceremony or something like that? The Thais may appear conservative, but why is Thailand a Mecca for pedophiles and sex tours if there is not a lot going on behind the scene.
Is the Thai organization that was reported today to have said this was cultural a real organization, or something made up?

Nobody here's denying that individual cases of REALLY heinous behavior exist. Nobody's denying that death-worthy perverts take serious, sickening, abusive advantage of weak and helpless people and permanently wreck their lives. We KNOW that crap happens, and we ALWAYS hope the perps get their one-way ticket to Hell. But understanding that is a helluva far cry from being shocked at some freak who invents new and twisted stuff in his head and puts it in a book like this Webb sicko. How much of what he wrote never actually happened to anyone until some perv read his writing and tried it? Maybe THAT'S a question you need to ask, huh? For that matter, how much of this material is the stuff of Mr. Webb's daily thought life? Just exactly what IS going on between his ears on a regular basis?
As far as the election goes, yeah, Webb's not the only author out there putting twisted junk in print, but his literary peers aren't running for a seat in the United States Senate, either. "As a man thinketh, so IS he." And these United States have NO need for THAT kinda "thinketh" on the floor of the Senate.
AND, finally, just exactly how does the one woman's shock over the abject perversions concocted by Mr. Webb in his depraved mind in any degree obligate her to fly off to the backside of f'n Egypt to mitigate abuse over there? The notion is non sequitur that one man's degenerate writings about imagined perversions and abuses ought compel another to such action. Evoke shock and disgust? Yes. Spark a missionary crusade against the abusive practice of some distant culture? Uh...no.
But, then, perhaps you might deign to regale us with your own accomplishments in this regard. What have Mr. Webb's writings driven YOU to do in Africa? Your so hot to infer an onus to international action deriving from shock over Mr. Webb's mental sewage; well, after YOU, bring on your curriculum vitae. Let's see YOUR extensive record of worldwide crusades against perversion and abuse spured by the literary follies of the decadent Mr. Webb. We are always more accepting of those who lead by example.
I don't doubt Allen will retain his seat. As far as a promotion in 2008 goes, he's got a lot of work to do. I'm discounting all the macacca and supposed racist talk. That's silly and irrelevant. However, when Allen has had the opportunity to advance himself in press conferences and on MTP, he's looked awkward, and quite frankly, inept. I'd prefer him over a couple of Repub "favorites", but he looks as though he's reached his peak as Senator.

Hey, there is a lot going on behind the scenes in every town, village and city in the United States. Does that mean anything to the supposed incident that Webb says he saw in Thailand? The incident appears to be outside in public with dirt all around.
I have read an article on some anthropological stuff on the internet that this penis sucking was supposedly a part of Thai tradition. Maybe that is where Webb got the idea. He most definitely did not walk down the streets and waterways of Thailand and happen to see it. This anthropological writing was suspect because it appeared to be trying to lessen the taboo of incest, as if incest can be ok within a society and thus should not be considered bad anywhere.
I start teaching at the university next week. Bet I could ask my 200 or so students about such things and I bet 200 would look at me shocked and insulted.
Once again, Webb wrote it. Webb is responsible for it. One wonders why he felt obliged to write it as it appears to have added nothing to his story. I think it does add a lot to what we know about Webb. But then what do I know, I only live in Bangkok, a seedy, sex crazed place where pedaphilia is running rampant, all the women are prostitues and all the males such penises - NOT.
