Philip Kevin Paulson, a Lutheran preacher's grandson who lost his religion and waged a 17-year legal battle to remove the Mount Soledad cross from public property, died yesterday of liver cancer. He was 59.
HOWARD LIPIN / Union-Tribune Mount Soledad cross foe Philip Paulson (left) attended a luncheon in his honor Sept. 3. Mr. Paulson, a 6-foot-5 Vietnam War veteran who lived in City Heights, became one of the county's most reviled residents when he prevailed in a lawsuit against the city of San Diego and continued with years of appeals that still are pending.
On July 31, doctors told Mr. Paulson, a Wisconsin native, that he had four months to a year to live. Despite the diagnosis, supporters were surprised to learn Mr. Paulson had died because doctors said recently the cancer appeared to be in remission. After traveling to San Francisco two weeks ago to receive an award, Mr. Paulson experienced flulike symptoms and was bedridden.
On Friday, he went to a hospital complaining of abdominal pain and remained in critical condition until his death at 2 p.m. yesterday, said his live-in companion of 17 years, Lorelei Lindsey

I say good riddance to some extremely bad rubbish.
Sucks that he died. Would have been nice that he lived to see the court tell him to go pound sound and leave the Cross alone.
I hate cancer more than anything in this world, and I'm sorry this man had to die of such a horrid disease. I am also sorry that he spent the last part of his life in such a senseless way, trying to destroy something instead of trying to build something.
I would just like to say that it appears he didn't win.
Bad luck to speak ill of the dead. His battle here is over. Now the White Throne Judgment is another thing.
Yeah, good luck with that...
Cancer is not a good thing. I wish his family well. I'll say this: he understands the weight of his arguments now.

good
Rosie O'Lesbian probably "outed" him as a liar, he got cancer and died. Outside of that I hate to hear of anyone suffering that miserable death.
Well said.
And less than one second later, he believed in the Creator again.
Looks like the ultimate judge spoke!
Once saved, always saved, sez I...but I wouldn't like to be in God's Front Office right about now. I suspect there is a monumental chewing out going on.
"Vengence is mine" So sayeth the Lord...
Cancer is the least of his problems now. Athiests are the biggest hypocrites trying to force their beliefs on others.
Prayers sent
Not sure I agree with your theology - I think he's wishing he could have done things a bit differently now.
I am not allowed to judge the state of this guy's soul, but for a PGK he's raising some really inferior fruit.
Just enough weight to cause one to wail and gnash their teeth...
Philip Kevin Paulson: "GOD IS DEAD, take down that cross"
GOD: "Philip Kevin Paulson is dead, BOOYAH!"
