Early voting began today. Good turnout for a beautiful fall day.
We have a number of hot propositions on the ballot - smoking ban, marijuana legalization etc.
Nevada is not yet California lite, but the cowboy mentality is being eaten away by the influx of Californicators.
Everyone do their part. Vote for the good guys and hope for others to do the same.

I was in the County Clerk's office at 1000 to insure that these stupid new Sequoia voting machines worked (I'm an election worker) and yes, quite a few people were standing in line to vote by 1030, some having driven 90+ miles to do so.
And yes, even here in one of the most rural counties in the state, we're seeing more and more californicators show up and prattle on endlessly about how they do things in California. Here's a clue to anyone from California moving to Nevada: We don't care how you did it in California. If it was so great in California, move back there.
Kind of silly that the Government says what leaves you can and cannot smoke.

I will be watching just to see how the smoking thing goes. I don't smoke, but something about banning smoking just gets on my nerves.
Before long we'll go to a gov't a school to learn how to smoke. Pot only!

We are still the wild west, and do not take kindly to a lot of rules.
You can buy liquor 24 hours a day 365 days a year.
You can gamble, vist the Bunny Ranch, shoot your gun in the hills and legally bet on the Bears.

Reno was much more conservative 10 years (and more) ago. Starting when California declared open war against small business in the mid-90's, the Reno area started getting californicated very quickly.
Now when we go into Reno, it is like driving in the central valley of California: mexican gang tagging everywhere you look.
I think the political silliness will reach the high point in the coming year as housing prices in Vegas and Reno start to deflate. Reno is now one of the most overpriced real estate markets in the entire US. We farmers in the center of the state listen to the tales of how much an acre-foot of water rights is selling for in Washoe County and sit here, slack-jawed with awe.
There are many reasons I remember Mr. Reagan so fondly ( besides how hard my late first wife & I campaigned for him in Georgia ) but among them are his maxims,
1-) Speak no ill of another Republican, and
2-) If you agree with a man 80%, he's not the Enemy.
We'd all do well to keep in mind how well that worked for him.
Sadly, it has a higher chance of passage than you estimate. There are more nanny-state females in Reno and Vegas than there are people blessed with common sense in this state.
What will be interesting is what happens if both of the anti-smoking initiatives pass. The two groups will likely start to duke it out in the court system.
On the subject of the "wild west" atmosphere of Nevada out here on the Pony Express trail -- what is most amusing to see is Californians when they see people packing guns in their cars out here. Carrying a loaded handgun in your car is legal in Nevada. Carrying a loaded long arm (rifle or shotgun) is not (this is a game code, not a criminal code).
Californian tourists seem to lose all bladder and bowel control at the mere sight of firearms. Californian hunters seem to lose all mental control with the mere possession of a firearm. Personally, I could do without either group.
