Why Gas Prices Dropped money.cnn.com ^ | October 16 2006 | Nelson D. Schwartz

(Fortune Magazine) -- If the recent plunge in gas prices is the result of a conspiracy by President George W. Bush to help the Republicans retain control of Congress, as 42 percent of Americans believe, according to one Gallup poll, a lot of Wall Streeters wish they'd been in on the plot.
So what really drove prices down - if not an Oliver Stone-worthy scenario involving the Commander-in-Chief, the House of Saud and Secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson cajoling his cronies at Goldman Sachs to sink the crude market?
By late summer, hedge funds and other investors had poured billions into long positions in oil, gasoline, natural gas and the rest of what traders call the "energy complex," all betting on a replay of the severe 2005 hurricane season that sent prices soaring in the wake of Katrina and Rita. But one day after oil reached a monthly high of $76.98 a barrel on Aug. 7, government meteorologists downgraded their hurricane forecast and cautioned that a repeat of 2005 was "unlikely."
That announcement, combined with the end of the summer driving season and a recalibration of the Goldman Sachs (Charts) commodity index that reduced the weighting of gasoline, prompted speculators to head for the exits even faster than they'd piled in.
The switch in Goldman's basket of commodities had been previously announced by the firm, but that didn't stop the conspiracy theorists.

He admitted he was both and pinged the admin mod saying those were "personal attacks". LOL!!!!

To believe that Bush got his "oil buddies" to manipulate gas prices, you have to believe that he managed to convince all the "greedy" oil companies in the U.S. to take massive hits in profits for at least two months just to get the Republicans re-elected. Sheer moonbattery.

She joined the 9th Circus? She is back on a fed appeals court somewhere. I thought it was in the East, but it may be the 9th Circus. I was so disheartened that I didn't pay attention.

It seems to me if Bush is as powerful as they claim, everyone should want him as President. He has the power to effect change while the demtards cannot even successfully win an election because of little diebold machines.

Can't you just admit you were wrong about Miers and conservatives were right to demand a verifiable conservative for the position? No one's position is verifiable before they assume a seat on the SC. Meirs was when the talking heads and a lot of shortsighted conservatives decided you could not trust GWB.
That might haunt the conservative movement for years.

A point was made that Meiers name was withdrawn after the Conservatives made their voices heard. I mean that the President offered Alito in response to that voice. As regards this election, the candidates are the candidates. Its too late to speak up. If the dems get in, we're all in the soup. But its not too late to vote Republican and that's what we must do.

Can't you just admit you were wrong about Miers and conservatives were right to demand a verifiable conservative for the position? Is it that difficult? We'll never know if you were right because Miers never got a chance to prove herself worthy of the job in front of the Senate panel because conservatives like you spent every day harpooning her nomination by making fun of her by calling her such names as "the cleaning lady". You aren't entitled to the moral high ground for that shameful behavior.

Yes all three of those are strong too. Continued job growth and sinking unemploymeny, and a continued strong housing market despite constant attempts to bury it, and consumer confidence up. And we supposedly have a weak economy. Whatever.

The military deserves better then a Democrat Congress in a time of war. The miltiary doesn't want to retreat from the war, and the Congress would force that to happen.
I never thought that growing up after Vietnam and seeing what pain it caused our country that there could ever be an American that would want that to happen to another generation of soldiers, but Kerry and the Dems decided to be anti-war once again and go back to their Blame America roots and now another Vietnam is a possibility unless we deny the Dems the Congress.
You are right. Our soldiers do NOT deserve to have to live with that. That alone should be motivation enough to deny them the Congress.
