Why Gas Prices Dropped money.cnn.com ^ | October 16 2006 | Nelson D. Schwartz

(Fortune Magazine) -- If the recent plunge in gas prices is the result of a conspiracy by President George W. Bush to help the Republicans retain control of Congress, as 42 percent of Americans believe, according to one Gallup poll, a lot of Wall Streeters wish they'd been in on the plot.
So what really drove prices down - if not an Oliver Stone-worthy scenario involving the Commander-in-Chief, the House of Saud and Secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson cajoling his cronies at Goldman Sachs to sink the crude market?
By late summer, hedge funds and other investors had poured billions into long positions in oil, gasoline, natural gas and the rest of what traders call the "energy complex," all betting on a replay of the severe 2005 hurricane season that sent prices soaring in the wake of Katrina and Rita. But one day after oil reached a monthly high of $76.98 a barrel on Aug. 7, government meteorologists downgraded their hurricane forecast and cautioned that a repeat of 2005 was "unlikely."
That announcement, combined with the end of the summer driving season and a recalibration of the Goldman Sachs (Charts) commodity index that reduced the weighting of gasoline, prompted speculators to head for the exits even faster than they'd piled in.
The switch in Goldman's basket of commodities had been previously announced by the firm, but that didn't stop the conspiracy theorists.

This is a crack down, and when the rubber meets the road, I think those Republican voters who p**s and moan about how they won't vote, will suck it up and vote rather then sit and have a little temper tantrum and hand elections to liberal Demcorats. I don't believe they'll just hand Congress to the liberals. There is too much at stake in time of war, and we can't do that to our military. The military deserves better then a Democrat Congress in a time of war. The miltiary doesn't want to retreat from the war, and the Congress would force that to happen.

The political climate in PA is a little different from that of other Northeastern States. The Philadelphia area is probably just as liberal as urban NY and New England, but there's the vast (though sparsely populated) conservative middle and the greater Pittsburgh area, where I live, which is socially conservative but also dominated by hard-core Union types, old-style democrats who haven't yet realized what their party has become.

Well, they did catch the Brownsville cult murderers in the 7-11 next to my house in NM right after I left. LOL

Thank you! Every conservative needs to realize that and think about what it will mean to have a Democrat Congress.

There are a lot of people that believe in Bush's magic wand. Bush is stupid until he can manipulate the economy, lower gas prices and secretly bomb the WTC...then he's smarter that the average Moonbat.

Staff Writer Midland Reporter-Telegram Former Soviet President visits Midland Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev compared the United States' proposed 700-mile wall on the U.S.-Mexico border to the Berlin Wall during a Tuesday visit to Midland. Addressing a Tuesday news conference at UTPB's Center for Energy and Economic Diversification, the JBS Public Leadership Institute Distinguished Lecture Series speaker was by turns serious and flippant prior to a reception with more than 100 people. "You remember President Reagan standing in Berlin and saying, 'This wall should be torn down,'" said the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize winner. "Now the United States seems to be building almost the Wall of China between itself and this other nation with which it has been associated for many decades and has had cooperation and interaction with. The other night I heard Beck say - and I'm paraphrasing here - "vote for the man, not the party" and "Vote for the best canidate - be they Republican OR Democrat". Now I can think of only 2 instances where that nonsense might apply - a vote for Joe Lieberman or Zel Miller.I will grant you that. He did repeat that mantra on his show last night in his opening segment.
