I misspelled "Papua New Guinea" in the headline. Thanks in advance if you can fix it.

Darwin, Australia could get hit by a tsunami. The city has already been destroyed twice, by the Japanese in WWII and by Cyclone Tracy on Christmas Day 1974.

I thought it needed to be greater than an 8 to produce a tsignificant tsunami.

Darwin is on the NW side of Australia, and this is to the Northeast of Australia.
And there wasn't a tsunami, it appears, anyway - quake was on land and fairly deep.

A Magnitude 7.1 earthquake generated a tsunami in 1998 killed over 3,000 people in New Guinea - it caused an underwater landslide.
In general, you do not get OCEAN-wide, rather than local, damaging tsunamis from anything under M 8.0.

What if that little donkey eater didn't test a nuclear device, rather intended to set off a wave of earthquakes? Japan, Hawaii, New Guinea

The article said it was epicentered about 575 kilometers Northeast of Port Moresby which places it farther from Australia. I hope the damage is minimal and the death toll is nil. Semi-off-topic, there's an archipelago for sale in PNG called The Conflict Islands (named after a British ship I believe)and it comprises 23 islands encompassing over 900 acres. If someone wanted to buy it for me as a Christmas gift...

Bizarre. My parents were in Maui for the 6.5 ish one (and the rest) yesterday. My aunt and uncle live on Papua. Crazy odds of two sets of family members in two different places with earthquakes of nearly the same magnititude in two back to back days. Hopefully we don't get a third set...(though with many of us living in SoCal you'd think we'd have been more apt to have had one! LOL) Maybe it's just our island located family! ;-)

Someone told me today that rumor has it that the explosions in North Korea are causing this. Anyone know if this is possible?
