I thought it needed to be greater than an 8 to produce a tsignificant tsunami.

A Magnitude 7.1 earthquake generated a tsunami in 1998 killed over 3,000 people in New Guinea - it caused an underwater landslide.

In general, you do not get OCEAN-wide, rather than local, damaging tsunamis from anything under M 8.0.
