A film that came and went in 2003 deserves another viewing if you saw it then and if you missed it you might pick it up for a family viewing. The film “Master and Commander” with Russell Crowe gives new insight into the at-sea culture of 1805 Britain; and sadly, speaks volumes about the degenerated world we occupy in 21st century America. “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” strikes viewers as an old-fashioned sea saga that few thought Hollywood could still produce. This is not just a war movie but a lesson in leadership, teamwork and character.
Most movies today offer us pabulum and fantasy. They don’t encourage us to greater good but instead emphasize the darker side of human conduct. Drug abuse, homosexuality and fantasy often fill the screen. Computer graphics so sophisticated they remove us from reality have enthralled Hollywood and thrilled viewers. Many of our “leading men” are pretty-boy weak sisters who may have a certain appeal to 14-year-old girls but have none of the raw manliness and power of John Wayne. Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Keanu Reeves come to mind, but they are not alone.
It seems Hollywood and television producers want us to worship the gay, lighthearted and without-depth in our culture today. Powerful men are largely taboo.

The ship is the Rose, a very authentic replica of a British fighting ship (I forget which class). For years the Rose offered paying passengers the opportunity to crew her as she sailed the Eastern seaboard. Passengers would climb the rigging and do all the other chores necessary to sail the ship. I had planned to do this myself but the Rose's owners sold her so she could be used to make the film so my procastination cost me the opportunity.

Do not trust your security, that of your family, or that of your nation to those who do not understand just how dangerous and tough the world is. It is all too easy to forget from the comfort of one's soft bed, well stocked kitchen, luxurious movie theatres, or lavish cocktail parties.
Those lounging in the baths of the decadent Leftist enclaves of America are having fun, no doubt, but they are deep in the delusion that, through their example, they can convert the world from a dangerous and tough place into one that is safe and gentle, where everyone accepts their ideals, where the fun of decadence will eradicate the danger and toughness of the world.
Such people are the greatest danger of all in a dangerous and tough world.
It is such decadence that will surrender the safety and gentleness that is also a part of the world to the dangerous and tough.
Strategic is right ... he was leading a distinctly inferior force ... keeping it in existence was itself a victory. Add to that, each time he retreated he first exacted from his enemy a high price for making him retreat. Under the right circumstances, that can be a winning strategy.

Have both the HH box set and Master and Commander on DVD. Great stories. I haven't seen anything on it but both have room for more episodes.
Actually, IBM used use 12 O'Clock High to demonstrate types of leadership. Great movie. I love what they can do with CGI nowadays, but I hope they NEVER remake 12 O'Clock High!

We have our own copy and watch it about once per year. This movie is a genuine depiction of life on the high seas at that time in history when the British Navy was shaping the modern world -- see book of that name by Arthur Hermann, another fine read.
One man, 2 questionable gender-confused types, and one metrosexual.

Thanks for the link. I hadn't thought about the Rose for a long time but I regret that I passed up the opportunity to sail on her. I figured there would always be time.
DiCaprio was not a "weak sister" in either Gangs of New York nor Departed.

John Wayne was a great institution and person, but not much of an actor. The only really great western he ever really made a difference in was The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, but that's because he played an arrogant jerk. Which by the way fit his acting perfectly.
There was only one Bogart. It's a pity that many of his movies are so hard to find on DVD.
According to the DVD they were very careful in recruiting extras for Master and Commander. The were looking for people who had the kind of battered look that a Royal Navy seaman of the day would have. I'm not sure I'd get the part since I have all my teeth!
I hope they make more episodes of both MAC and HH series, but I reckon they'd be rather expensive.
