All Things Considered, October 14, 2006 · Former Rep. Gerry Studds, the first openly gay man elected to Congress, dies at 69. He retired in 1997. Studds was censured by the House in 1983 after admitting an affair with a 17-year-old former page, but won re-election.

The difference between Foley and Studds is that Foley felt shame, and resigned. Studds didn't, and didn't.
Foley rejected what he did, later claiming it was because he was messed with as a kid or an alkie.
Studds--who didn't TALK about sex with a 16-year-old, he DID it--embraced what he did. It was a brilliant tactic; he said "Yeah, I did it--go on, you homophobes, attack me in this time of AIDS and the Religious Right in control of everything, I dare ya!"
If Foley held a press conference in which he apologized for the IM's but claimed it was because he was a repressed gay man, kept down by the religious forces that have taken control of the GOP, he would be guaranteed re-election, especially if he switched parties in protest to the anti-gay bigots in the Republican party, or whatever.
It's all about standing up and saying "I'm proud of what I did" instead of "I have sinned." Studds simply shocked people, who assumed that's what gay guys do, anyway, so let's be liberal and open-minded and accept what looks to US like perversion, but we are just closed minded about alternative lifestyles.
He was a pioneer, all right, but the figure who followed in his footsteps wasn't Foley, but Bill Clinton.

I've heard of this guy. He's the one who pioneered homosexual acts with minors entrusted to the care of congressmen such as himself.
Of course, we all know what this means, right? Since the Stud is dead, and it is unChristian to speak ill of the dead, we can no longer raise his name in rebuttal to the criticism of Foley.
The rats even know when to die at the most politically advantageous moment. They run circles around the GOP, even in death.

It always bothered me that that POS kept getting reelected as my rep.
I was glad that he retired, but disturbed by his ability to leave on his terms.
The country was better off with him out of the Congress, and I'll keep my other opinions about the man to myself out here now that he has expired.
