Book: Bush Aides Called Evangelicals 'Nuts' White House advisors sought the support of conservative Christians but mocked them in private, writes a onetime administration official. By Peter Wallsten, Times Staff Writer October 13, 2006
WASHINGTON A new book by a former White House official says that President Bush's top political advisors privately ridiculed evangelical supporters as "nuts" and "goofy" while embracing them in public and using their votes to help win elections.
The former official also writes that the White House office of faith-based initiatives, which Bush promoted as a nonpolitical effort to support religious social-service organizations, was told to host pre-election events designed to mobilize religious voters who would most likely favor Republican candidates.
The assertions by David Kuo, a top official in the faith-based initiatives program, have rattled Republican strategists already struggling to persuade evangelical voters to turn out this fall for the GOP.
Kuo is scheduled to appear Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes" as part of a rollout arranged by his publisher, Simon & Schuster, which shares a corporate parent with CBS.
Despite a publisher-enforced embargo, a copy of the book was purchased early at a Manhattan bookstore by a producer for MSNBC's "Countdown," a spokesman for the cable channel said. Program host Keith Olbermann began reading excerpts on his Wednesday show.
While many Democrats opposed the initiative as a violation of church-state separation, the White House used the program to build alliances with prominent African American ministers, some of whom switched political allegiances to back Bush. It was part of a larger minority outreach program designed by Rove and other conservative activists to slice off pieces of the traditional Democratic coalitions in order to build a lasting GOP majority.

Another orchestrated hit job by the DBM.
No kidding. Evangelicals sell our collective souls in the market place and in the political arena.
If we focused our efforts on what we are called to do and not create a big Israel we wouldn't need to worry about everything else.
Definitely the wrong person for THAT job. I wonder what axe he has to grind.
"...and not create a big Israel..."
???
Considering the next Democrat administration will likely bring back public crucifiction, I'd say I'm pretty happy with the one we've got now.
"Top Official," probably means a nepotic hire charged with making sure the trashcans were emptied.
LOL, it is so friggin' transparent...the headline should be that they think evangelicals are "nuts" and "goofy".
Give it up, LameStream Media.
All sixteen viewers of Olbermann's show were outraged.
If you're not used to being called a nut - or worse - you're probably not an evangelical.
YAWN! There must be an election pretty soon.
it's obvious that the main goal in this election is to demotivate Christians from going to the polls. the target audience for these hit pieces is the conservative base, not the moderate so-called swing vote.
it's only motivating me all the more.
MSM (and 60 Minutes in particular) always, ALWAYS carrying water for the Dems, and going into overdrive in October of even-numbered years.
My only hope is that by now, evangelicals, and all conservatives for that matter, see this for what it is and will respond accordingly.
Good Question!
The thought process goes like this: if we elect the right politicians, and pass the right laws, then God will heap His blessings down on us. It comes from the covenant of works that is found through Scripture. God would promise to do xyz if Israel did their part. The problem is that Israel did not, could not, do their part, and they would be hauled of to Babylon every few generations.
The problem is two-fold: like I already said, Israel could not carry out their end of the deal, so why do Evangelicals think America can. Second, the deal was with national Israel, not the US.
If we Evangelicals could get it through our collective heads that Christians are Spiritual Israel, and live like it, things would be better for our nation and for Christianity.
What is that verse that talks about being a fool for Jesus?
Count me in!!!!!
Nice try LSM (lame stream media), we vote with our minds not our feelings.
Yes, the slew of Bush-bashing books, the "Foley fallout" and "fake but accurate" polls are all part of Dems' GOP-voter-suppression campaign. It worked for them several times before, far better than motivating their eclectic groups to vote. I doubt that this time it will work for them any better than regular mid-term election, but they'll declare victory anyway...
1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;
Luke 6:26 Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
Mark 3
(talking about Jesus)
21 And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.
22 And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.
