GERTZ: U.S. doubts Korean test was nuclear; Readings fall short of atomic explosion... MORE...

U.S. intelligence agencies say, based on preliminary indications, that North Korea did not produce its first nuclear blast yesterday, WASHINGTON TIMES star reporter Bill Gertz is set to report in Tuesday editions.

U.S. officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that seismic readings show that the conventional high explosives used to create a chain reaction in a plutonium-based device went off, but that the blast's readings were shy of a typical nuclear detonation.

'There was a seismic event that registered about 4 on the Richter scale, but it still isn't clear if it was a nuclear test. You can get that kind of seismic reading from high explosives.'

The underground explosion, which Pyongyang dubbed a historic nuclear test, is thought to have been the equivalent of several hundred tons of TNT, far short of the several thousand tons of TNT, or kilotons, that are signs of a nuclear blast, the official said. Developing...

If Kim Jong Il wants us to think he has a weapon we should respond like he has ten and is about to sell them to our enemies. Not responding in any way will tell Iran that we don't mind if they are next in line in the nuclear club.

Reminds me of the rapist who needs Viagra...North Korea's shemale midget and the Desert Hitler in Iran are in desparate need of a nuke to enhance their Napoleanic complex.

""That train explosion in Ryonchon in '04 measured 3.6."

...and that train was guess where......just down the track from the nookyuler site ( that's the Korean spelling, which the Prez already knows how to pronounce, unlike his detractors).

I guarantee you that if Pres Bush someday goes after NK and things don't go well after a week, there will be Democrats screaming that he manipulated our intelligence to make NK look stronger than it really was. Even with the vile sputterings from the left today. They cynically know that the public has a short memory.

Considering the colossal dud of a missile test on the 4th of July. If we can confirm the hoax, Kim Jong will have some serious explaining to do.

He would become the laughing stock of the whole area, if not the whole world.

Of course there are those that believe he already is.

Also posted this on the other thread. It may get pulled so reposting here. Also marking thread.

The Russians and Chinese do have a motive to lie. They do not want the US to intervene with Iran. If North Korea can be made into a much more important issue, the US wont be able to logistically handle both Iran and North Korea at the same time. We would have to deal with North Korea while ignoring Iran. That would give Iran time and cover to fully develop their nukes. Iran has much more money (due to oil) then North Korea has. There was a large explosion. Both Russia and China claim it was 5 to 15 kilotons. Coincidently, both Russia and China do not want the US to intervene with Irans rush to develop nukes. In other words, it could have been smoke and mirrors and another fake October surprise for the dimwits to bash Bush. Note - This is all theoretical at this point in time.

L'il Kim may have had his own reasons for faking what he has (see Hussein, Saddam). Plus, in his insulated world, everything is easy to fake. They fake everything, and nobody ever tells Kim it's obvious. So Little Big Man didn't apply a lot of mental energy toward "what if they figure out it's a fake?"*

But the hilarious part is that the Dems have to withdraw their already executed "Bush failed" autoresponse. Then again, tomorrow they'll probably be hailing Carter as a genius.

* a type of mental lapse known as a "Ratherism".

Hell, Kim probably just yanked our chain so that he could could hear some more of that "sweet" Democrat rhetoric. It's music to his ears...even he couldn't think up stuff that nasty to say about Bush.

I didn't think I'd ever agree with you on anything, but I have to say I've been expecting the US to come out and say that it wasn't nuclear. It seems we are incapable of a response out of fear of ticking off the liberals and the Europeans, so the easiest course to avoid total humiliation is ...

This used to be the greatest country in the world. The liberals have taken it down quite a few notches. Are we going to let them completely take it down?

Not really. It is a gimmick that was never practical for the US Army VS the Soviets. They would use rockets or have the Air Force bomb the target. The Atomic Cannon was like that as well.

This would be a good device for a terrorist.
