The real problem with North Korea is it's artillery that can saturate Seoul. We could probably take it that out with our Air Force, but ...the number of people to be killed would be staggering. Otherwise, I believe the South Koreans can defeat the North in a conventional war. And the US Air Force could essentially destroy the North's communist government.

How many nuclear subs does America have and how many are in Japanese waters right now? I say we send Japan a bomb to borrow which is controlled by the U.S. military but on their mainland, that might send a message to the mini-man of Korea. I am really alarmed, living in California is a little too close for comfort.

We will do nothing.We will do nothing because there really is very little we can do. We, and our allies, stand to lose the most from a major war breaking out in Asia. North Korea has nothing...they have nothing to lose. If the world economy tanks, Kim Jong Il yawns and says "so what?" Not so for us, no so for Japan or South Korea or even Russia and China. Kim Jong Il knows that China nor Russia will tolerate an expansion of U.S. or Japanese influence and power in NK. He can play us all off each other over and over again.
And on top of all that, we probably don't have the capability of successfully fighting yet another war of conquest without serious domestic sacrifice...and that's not going to happen either.
All that's going to happen is super-heated rhetoric.

I don't think we need a non-aggression pact per se; we need their support and cooperation. They've dropped the ball too on this. They were probably the one country that could have stopped him, and they didn't. I understand they fear a huge refugee problem that severe sanctions might cause. Still, we have very little room for maneuver here.

The Pakistani bombs fit on THEIR missiles, and Pakistan sold their compact bomb designs (Chinese origin) to all of A.Q. Khans clients, including NK. There is nothing secret about even a lightweight bomb, sub-1-ton, that is a reasonable payload for a Scud-derivative, or the other missile designs NK has. It is not safe to assume that the NK's do not know how to make a deliverable bomb.
The knowledge is out there. All anyone really needs is enough Plutonium.

North Korea in nuclear test claim
North Korea says it has carried out its first ever test of a nuclear weapon, the state news agency has reported. It said the underground test, done in defiance of international warnings, was a success and had not resulted in any leak of radiation.
A South Korean official said an explosion had been detected in the north-east of North Korea, measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale.
North Korea said last week that it planned to test a nuclear weapon.
South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun has called an emergency meeting of his government's National Security Council.
A South Korean official said that there had been a grave change in the security situation on the peninsula.
Officials in South Korea have been quoted as saying that an explosion was detected in north Hamgyong province in North Korea.
South Korea's Yonhap news agency is reporting that the test took place in Gilju in Hamgyong province.
Prior to the test, there had been speculation that any such trial would take place either in Gilju or Hagap in the centre of the country.
The entire region has been on high alert since North Korea said last week it would conduct a nuclear test.
Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has just arrived in Seoul for a meeting with Mr Roh, following talks on the crisis with his Chinese counterparts in Beijing.
At the Beijing summit, Japanese and Chinese leaders had earlier said that such a test would be considered "unacceptable".
