Oh, I'm sorry, I must have imagined all those retail items saying "made from China" pre-dating Bush. So in 6 years Bush not only brought back the U.S. economy from a recession and new highs in the stock market, by golly they raised China's economy from third world status to comparable to ours in six years as well! he's been quite busy, hasn't he?

Nevermind all those other nations out there that refuse to stop dealing with Iran. One word from us and they would have stopped trading with China leaving them in that third rate economy they had before 2001. Uh-huh.

I'm sorry, I don't know how I could have missed all that.

Note, the sarcasm is deeply embedded above. When you persist in embracing stupidity for the sake of Bush bashing, don't expect anything less.

North Korea says it has carried out its first ever test of a nuclear weapon, the state news agency has reported.

RE: "first ever"

Does anyone else recall the History Channel show that claimed Japan tested a nuke in what is now NK about the day before VJ day? The show was based on one contemporary news report stating that and a variety of more recently available details that led some guy to write a book claiming this. The test site and team were captured soon thereafter by the Soviets so there aren't first hand sources to confirm or deny the story. The site was supposedly above ground on an island just off shore. I don't know whether we ever held it during Korean War to have a chance to test it, but as Trinity is still a bit radioactive I presume the alleged site could still be checked out whenever NK falls. With a measly 0.5KT yield its possible the NKs had neither the first, nor the biggest nuclear test in their own country!

That's a philosophy that allows money to literally control our lives

You are right about that, and it's probably an extreme position. But the economy (money) controls our politics...and our politics controls our response to this action.

While other factors may play a role, Bush doesn't have the political capital left (the Democrats have seen to that) to engage NK in a military conflict - nor does he have the political capital left to endanger the U.S. economy through such military action.

None of those things need enter Kim Jong Il's calculations. He knows our motivations, and knows we cannot risk losing what he doesn't have anyway (a wealthy society). So he can jerk us around till the cows come home, knowing he's relatively secure in his hell-hole.

Well then what was Clinton's option? Either it's acceptable or not, either it's a threat or not. And what is so all impossible about attacking N Korea? If N Korea is not a military option, I guess nothing is. I support President Bush. I don't support or accept a nuclear North Korea. And if N Korea is allowed to go down this path, there will be a horrible day of reckoning somewhere in the future.

I will second that. Or they will Finnlandize N. Korea, make it a subject state completely under their control.

Keep me PINGed for Japanese news articles (as always).

Let me know if you see anything over there about Japan coming to terms with nuclear weapons. I know that there is an annual memorial to the atomic attacks and some victim mentality (particularly from the no nukes crowd).

"Our army is strained right now. It worries me that we may not have enough troops to counter this threat."

Keep in mind that we have the Air Force and Navy with plenty of precision guided munitions.
