Vanity question: today I was in the area of Union Station (Washington, DC) and noticed that all of the American and state flags around there were being flown at half-staff. A few blocks away I saw the same thing at a government building.
I've looked online to figure out why this was, but I haven't come up with anything. Does anyone have any ideas?
There would have been fireworks at my house.
No, that would be fireworks, parades and kids let out of school.
It has to be for Columbus day. Flying the flags at half staff, must have been intended as an insult to Columbus, by the rewrite history buttheads.
Columbus Day, Oct. 9, federal holiday. Don't expect any mail delivery tomorrow.
No doubt.
My neighbors are retired military, and they were flying the flag in their yard at half mast too.
Flags are lowered for Columbus Day? Which is now renamed, on my wall calendar, as Day of the Race (M) -- which must be 'Dia de la Raza' (Mexico). I nearly tore it off the wall.
"Which is now renamed, on my wall calendar, as Day of the Race"
You are joking, I hope.
In Venezuela (per Chavez) it's called "Day of Indigenous Resistance!"
BTW, Día de la Raza ("day of the race"), commemorating the first encounters of Europe and Native Americans, was first celebrated in Argentina in 1917, Venezuela in 1921, Chile in 1923, and Mexico in 1928.
NO!! I went to mark Columbus Day -- we have the flag he flew under, I thot I'd hang it up. And there it was, marked like that!! (made by Mead, Westvaco Office Products -- one of those big month-by-month ones).
I 'bout ripped it off the wall.
It's from the 1920's? Correlating with what, I wonder? It sounds really BAD in English.
I definitely am putting up Ferdinand and Isabella's flag.
Columbus Day? Today is a holiday and that is why everyone is off today! Ya!!!! Love Monday's off!!!! Hope everyone enjoys it!
Yes our military personnel getting killed is a horrible incident. A bunch of sick folks is not exactly what I would call horrible. Priorities!!!!
Given the political leanings of the civil service, I figure it may have something to do with the tenth anniversary of Fox News.
They have been ordered in the past for memorial reasons, maybe it was ordered because of the attack on the little girls in the Amish schoolhouse.
Considering Iraq is our ally, and it was not known by me if hundreds were going to die, it might have been a kind gesture to them. The news reports I saw didn't have much info. The five deaths was alot (for us). I was just throwing out everything I could think of. I don't know :)
I just googled why I saw flags here in Ca at half mast today and found this FR post from last month. Still no answer that I am aware of either.
I googled and found the below answers to the same question on chacha.com. Dorothy or JFK??
President Barack Obama
has ordered the U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff at the White House and at all public buildings and military installations on Thursday in honor of civil rights
legend Dorothy Height. ChaCha!
Apr 28 2010, 04:47pm | www.lasvegassun.com Sadly, I can find no mention of South Carolina flags being flown at half staff. It is either a mistake, or someone local has died.
Sep 13 2009, 09:12pm Flags must remain at half-mast until sunset on Sunday and be lowered again until sunset on the day of Sen. Ted Kennedy’s burial.
Aug 30 2009, 12:13pm | www.business-standard.com Flags around the country are being flown at half mast to remember Senator Ted Kennedy, who died Thursday. He was 77 years old.
