Man Beaten To Death In Low-Security O.C. Jail
(CBS) SANTA ANA, Calif. A Mission Viejo man awaiting trial on suspicion of possessing child pornography for sale was beaten to death in a jail unit for low-security inmates, an Orange County sheriff's representative said Friday.
John Derek Chamberlain, 41, was "murdered by an inmate or inmates while in the shower" at the Theo Lacy jail in Orange, the department's Jim Amormino said.
Guards got a call of a "man down" about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, and Chamberlain was declared dead at a hospital about an hour later, Amormino said.
Investigators were interviewing some 140 inmates, he said.

I am a constitutionalist, as most of us here are, and that man was innocent until proven guilty. Now if he were beaten to death in prison, after being found guilty, that would be different set of circumstances.

No a jury of your peers... that is the American way. A judge can be corrupted... what if he were a friend to the vile POS on trial before him?
Then would you love the system of a judge?

Sorry for my delayed response. I had to look up the word "pusillanimous."
I'm sorry if you took offense to my little joke. I really was just trying to be funny in a light hearted way.

"Yeah.. I get it... you quote a man who would not condone the killing of a man who has not been afforded a trial by his peers.
Perhaps you should read more of Hoffer's work before cut it and quote it to support your sick view of justice."

Yeah, anceecee, I quote a man who would not condone the killing of a man who has not been afforded a trial by his peers.
Pardon my views, this is just my sick view of justice.
Strange world.

BUT only after a trial. So what you mean is let's give them a fair trial, then convict them. I see, that is much better.

"You were "having a little fun" at the expense of a man's death.
Was the guy a sicko who deserved to die? We won't even begin to know because there was not a chance for a trial."
Two 100% correct statements.

Ddon't you know everyone in jail and prison is innocent. EVERYONE.
In my opinion, the guy got what he deserve and the other inmates saved the tax payers a pile of money.

Now if he were beaten to death in prison, after being found guilty, that would be different set of circumstances. Why is that?
To: volunbeer
In light of that fact... why should the taxpayers pay a million plus dollars to try and convict the guy? Let a panel of judges review the evidence and if they determine it is overwhelming the man should die IMMEDIATELY. Because our Constitution, our contract with those we ALLOW to govern us, mandates that we get a trial with the burden of proof being on them (the government). Thank God you wasn't one of the founding Fathers.

Uh,no, what I meant was perfectly clear, and your sarcasm is entirely unwarranted.
You have the fair trial to separate the legitimate child predators from those who have been falsely accused. Once our system has decided who is legitimately guilty, then I have no problem with the death penalty being an option during sentencing for convicted child predators.
Thank God for the Bill of Rights. Mob justice can be scary indeed.

No. Obviously this is a special case but I would find it hard to believe that a conspiracy to execute the wrong man could exist between numerous investigators from multiple agencies, both state and federal prosecutors, and a panel of judges.
I agree a jury of our peers is the foundation for justice in America but at the same time I don't believe a registered sex offender with a previous conviction deserves the same rights as you or I get when the case against him is totally overwhelming.
Why rape the little girl? What about her? Her family was murdered, she was raped and watched her brother be raped and murdered, and now she has to go through a trial for a convicted sex offender POS who was not only released from prison but was given a low bond on a seperate charge committed prior to these horrible acts.
Enough is enough. One strike and you are out for sex offenders should be the norm in all cases of child rape.

Beats me... where is this coming from? I thought I was on FR... seems just as nutty as the interviews with the wacko "church group" who were condemning the little Amish girls to hell.

Not that I would agree with the "Prison Justice" either. Seriously, I thought that line might have been misconstrued and it was. I am a Constitutionalist and a strict rule-of-law type of person. I have seen third world countries when the order of law doesn't rule. What I meant was that, at least then he would have been convicted, therefore the conversation would have taken a different route.

I don't think it is OK for prison mobs to beat up or kill inmates. But I do reserve the right to find amusement in it when it happens.

The problem isn't with the structure of the trial system, the problem is with the sentencing of the first time offender. Perhaps more work should be done to strengthen sentencing for the crime of rape and especially rape of a minor child. The sentences for these crimes have not been very harsh.
Note that this man was not being held for rape of a child. He was being held for indecent exposure and possession of porn and alcohol in his vehicle. He should have been afforded a fair trial and should have a reasonable expectation of safety while incarcerated.
