The watchdog group that first provided the FBI with suspicious e-mails from then-Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.) said yesterday that FBI and Justice Department officials are attempting to cover up their inaction in the case by making false claims about the group.
Law enforcement officials said the allegations by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) are without merit, and they stood by allegations that the group had refused to provide some information to the FBI.
The dispute is the latest controversy this week for CREW, a liberal-leaning group that has come under attack from House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) and other Republicans because it has received money from a foundation funded by liberal financier George Soros.
CREW held a news conference Monday to announce that in July it had provided the FBI suspicious e-mails between Foley and a former House page. The group criticized the bureau for not taking more aggressive action and asked Justice Department Inspector General Glenn A. Fine to investigate the FBI's handling of the case.
Law enforcement officials said then that the e-mails did not provide enough evidence of a possible crime to warrant a full investigation. In the e-mails, Foley praises the physical attributes of one page and asks another teenager for his picture.

The teen whose physical attributes were discussed was over 18, and asking for a picture is not a crime.
Ms. Sloan had in the past worked for Sen. Joseph Biden(D) of Deleware as well as John Conyers. She's a liberal hack.
The DemocRATS' "foleygate" fiasco is starting to look more and more like another Rathergate fiasco with forged and phony "documents." Somebody needs to go to jail.
That's rich!!
They don't want Freeh and the FBI is wrong! Doesn't get any better than this.
Roll her up on the blocks and let's salvage what we can...
"..One target of Republican criticism is Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), the group that last year assisted former Rep. Chris Bell (D-Texas) in drafting an ethics complaint against DeLay, which resulted in an admonishment of DeLay from the ethics committee. At last weeks press conference, Melanie Sloan, CREWs executive director, said that DeLay should step down as majority leader.
From 1995 to 1998, CREWs Sloan served as minority counsel for the House Judiciary Committee under Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.). Before that, Sloan served as the nominations counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee under Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.)..."
CREW is a Soros Org and Sloan worked for Democrats. This material was held held back for maximum effect on the election. The political motivations are so obvious that any part of this has to be looked at extra closely. For Instance, how can we know the IMs are real and not fabrications like Memogate? The emails we know about are very mild by comparison.
Probably typed on an IBM Selectric too.
Ya, we're sort of outraged!
Today when Cavuto asked Soros about this, Soros said that he contributes money, but knows nothing about what these groups do.
So I guess the FBI will just pack up its investigation and go home. CREW doesn't want to play. Oh well.
The jig is up.
Thanks for that link

Update: People with the same names as John Conyer's Detroit office staffers just happen to have addresses in neighboring upscale suburb Royal Oak, Michigan.
May mean something. May mean nothing.
I'd post the list, but I don't know, seems sort of an invasion of privacy given this is all just a hunch of a fishing expedition at this point.

Could it be that the Staffer they are talking about is Foley's ex-chief of staff, Kirk?
Could it be that they know that it was Edmund chatting with Kirk, using Foley's AIM account? Could it be that they knew this because they put them up to it back in April 2003 when they were just getting going?
FBI should grill them good, including a polygraph session.
