Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting
NICKEL MINES, Pa. At least two female students and one slightly older female who may have been a teacher's aide were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.
State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.
"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.
Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.
"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.
After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims some critically wounded were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.
I keep thinking about the perps family also. Three kids that he had just taken to the bus stop. How many lives ruined by this guy is incredible.
Lower than ANY life form we know of ...
Inexplicable.
"but he told them that he was going to count to 10, then start shooting. That's when they broke in."
If that is indeed what he told them - then no- I don't blame them.
You missed my point with technicalities. Cell phone, whatever, one adult should have stayed with the children. Guess I view it as a captain going down with the ship.
If one of those girls had been my little 6 year old being tied up and I walked out on her in the scariest time of her life that would be a living hell for the rest of my life. Better to die with the child than have that on one's mind forever. No one seems to answer the actually question, how do you walk out on a child and leave them with a psycho?
This Friday was Homecoming in our small town. Someone called in and threatened to shoot the HS cheerleaders so they weren't allowed to march in the parade, have a pep rally or even cheer at the game. This incident in PA shows that we really do have to take these things seriously.
Thank You!
Nope. I pretty much assume that everyone kills these days no matter what you do. I had an incident some years ago where a man tried to assault me at a payphone. I fought back not knowing if he had a knife, a gun, or whatever and he left. Then I called the police with a good description of the perp.
ditto what you said.
I don't blame them. I've already stated that they probably would have died also. But we don't know that either. How do you not blame an adult for leaving children with a killer?
You are so right about this.
The fact that they were innocent children is hard enough to bear, but that they were part of a community that attempts to live life in simplicity and avoidance of worldly influence makes it even more shocking, IMO.
God be with them. This is just horrible.....
I wonder if the teacher was just very naive to the ways of the world and did not "believe" the perp would harm the girls? Just a thought.....
Amen... we need Him now more than ever.
Yep. I mean, from everything I've heard today, they had no idea he was going to do this.
Can you imagine if you came home and found suicide notes for all from your husband? Then this?
And his poor kids.
Such a sad sad reality left behind, all for some selfish evil act.
The women that were let go all had babies or were pregnant
Would you have both of your children killed?
Sophie's choice,
He started shooting THEN they broke in.
I also would pray for the killer's children. What a horrible thing to live with! Thinking "I came from this garbage"! Never mind being raised by it!
But in this situation it was an unarmed room of young people and women, and the perp was a guy with a shotgun and a semi-auto handgun. The only thing that you would accomplish by trying to attack him would be forcing him to shoot.
Also, it may be one thing to make that decision to defend yourself, but in this situation, an attempt to defend could result in the guy shooting others.
Since it seems you missed the first press conference from the State Police, they plan on having another one around 6 with updates.
The policeman made it a point to say that he would not speculate on things he did not know.
