Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting
NICKEL MINES, Pa. At least two female students and one slightly older female who may have been a teacher's aide were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.
State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.
"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.
Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.
"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.
After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims some critically wounded were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.
"I am also tired of reading the perps died of a self inflicted gunshot wounds."
As I stated, that's perfectly fine with me.
We are far too nice to criminals and terrorists.
The State Police spokesman in his news conference said that there was a call at 10:36 to 911 from the teacher. The police were at the school by 10:45.
I know how you feel. I felt the same when I heard they were left alone with him. Sad, sad day.
I don't even look for it from the perspective of trying to attack the guy. I'm looking more from the perspective of not abandoning children to a psycho.
I think you know too little about them.
There is no "motive" that justifies evil. We learned that on 9/11/01, if not before.
I know, one of the teachers made it to a phone, there was not one on the premises.
if the perps want to off themselves, i really wish they would do it first - before they harm anyone else.
Thanks for the ping.
Only people who know nothing about the Amish/Mennonites would be creeped out. I've lived near them my whole life and they are, for the most part, fine people.
It stinks, but the killer left home this morning planning not to return, and the police had to deal with it as best they could.
I don't agree. In cases like this, where it is clear the perp is guilty, then there is no point in processing them. The police should release the perp to the local community, and provide people with small knives, ice picks, soldering irons and acid, and let them deal with him. Police cannot assist, but should stick around to make sure they don't kill him too quickly. The execution should take a minimum of two hours, up to a week, to allow for overnight wound pain and infection.
We are trying to keep the focus on the children out of respect and are pulling any subject which could result in a hot sidebar, including homeschool debates and certain theories known to cause lengthy debate.
Usually there is one female teacher in an Amish school house. She is a young and unmarried.
I did not suggest that there was. But let's say the perp had been middle eastern? Wouldn't we want to know whether he was part of a terrorist plot or simply a different kind of creep who went nuts? That's why motive can be important. For our safety, not for any concern for the bastard himself.
I did not know that.
True enough!
He was going to kill today no matter what. He was a milk truck driver who dealt with the Amish. He also was supposed to take a drug test today, if he took it or not nobody is saying. He left notes for his wife and children which didn't make much sense. God know why he did this. On the news I heard it was revenge for something that happened 20 yrs ago. What a sad day it is for these families.
