Yep, certain poisons.
Also, a long way of saying, bittersweet.

Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

I did know about the cyanide in 1993, but you're right, not many people are aware of that fact.
I do wonder now, if there are other instances in their messages where they've quoted each other verbatim.
I remember pausing reading that line when UBL's tape came out. Now add "Manhattan" and the mysterious sweet odor that still wafts through the city on occasion. By now, the people of Manhattan are used to the sweet scent, probably not even calling it in to law enforcement anymore.
While looking up "sweet" "bitter" and UBL, I ran across Bin Laden and his honey enterprise. Something I hadn't known. Sharing it here in case others aren't aware of it either:

Yes, they will try. Probably from the water.
"{He is the one who has let free the two bodies of flowing water, one sweet and palatable, and the other salty and bitter. And He has made between them a barrier and a forbidding partition.} (Qur'an 25:53)"
Interesting that the bitter/sweet allusion you found is juxtaposed to "water". Another translation of that verse starts by saying: "It was He who sent the two seas rolling . . ."
"the water"/"the sea"
The 1/19 (9/11 "re-versed") UBL tape that also talks about being "trapped" in that passage about the "butcher of Vietnam" also calls Bush "the butcher of Washington", which to me, signaled DC as a/the prime target. From their perspective, it probably gnaws on them every day seeing the White House and Congress still there, just like it probably ate at them for eight years every time they saw video of the NYC skyline with the WTC still standing. The "sweet vs bitter" allusion may not only be significant in and of itself, but in its surrounding context in both tapes.
This was something *very* interesting on your google link (and there were also some similarities in language between the UBL/Zawahiri tapes and Ahmadinejad's speeches earlier this year). And when you think about it, that makes absolute sense.

PAIN IN SLUMS OF CHAVEZ - CARACAS KIDS LIVE IN FEAR
October 3, 2006
by Douglas Montero
nypost.com
I'D LIKE Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez to meet one of his countrymen, 15-year-old Manuel Gonzalez.
Manuel, who's never been to school, lives in a tin-roofed shack with walls made of slabs of half-inch-thick wood, cardboard and flattened oil drums. His "house" clings precariously to La Vega, one of hundreds of hillside slums that dot Chavez's oil-rich capital.
Each day, Manuel lugs buckets of water or propane tanks so his pregnant mother, 12-year-old sister and 1-year-old brother can eat, bathe and flush the toilet.
"I'm scared. I don't want to live here, but I have to take care of my family," Manuel told me.
Chavez should come here, as I did, to see firsthand his country's horrific underbelly - the worsening poverty that he neglects even as he pretends to be a champion of the poor.
It'd be a better use of his time than trips abroad and to New York, where Chavez created an uproar last month by denouncing President Bush as "sick," an "alcoholic" and the "devil."
Here, it seems the devil is closer to home.

Defense Ministers Express Concerns Over Venezuela
By Kathleen T. Rhem
American Forces Press Service
MANAGUA, Nicaragua, Oct. 3, 2006 Nations in this region are concerned over recent arms sales by Venezuela, several officials attending a security conference here said yesterday.
Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, along with defense ministers from 32 other Western Hemisphere nations, are meeting here this week to discuss issues of mutual concern. Several ministers mentioned Venezuela as an issue of concern, U.S. leaders attending the talks said.
Ministers from Latin American nations expressed concern that some of the things arriving in that country could conceivably end up in the hands of terrorist groups, the (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as FARC) or other groups, Rumsfeld said.
Countries in the Western Hemisphere, including the United States, are concerned over Venezuelas recent purchase of 100,000 rifles from Russia and other purchases of high-performance fighter aircraft and boats.
I can understand neighbors being concerned, and I guess each county has to make a judgment as to what they do, how they invest their money, what they purchase, Rumsfeld said.
Army Gen. Bantz J. Craddock, who is responsible for military operations throughout Central and South America and the Caribbean, said that even a year ago countries in this region werent as concerned about Venezuela as a threat. Now many are concerned, he said.
(There is) some concern about the uptick in weapons purchases, he said, noting that countries wonder, Is it indeed a modernization, or is it something else?
Craddock said countries have expressed more concern over the past few months with regard to transparency and the volume of weapons and other military equipment moving into Venezuela.
Latin American nations, through the Organization of American States, have an agreement in place to report pending weapons purchases and completed purchases, as well as to declare the reason for such purchases.
Arms sales everywhere in the region need to be transparent, Craddock said. They need to comply with provisions of the OAS with regard to weapons purchases, sales (and) provisions for registering such sales.
Its also important to look at countries intent regarding weapons sales, Craddock said. Purchases of military equipment are reasonable if a country needs help with internal security threats or external threats on their sovereign territory, he said.
However, Rumsfeld told reporters traveling with him, I dont know of anyone threatening Venezuela.

Lawyer optimistic on young man accused of blasphemy in Pakistan
By Sheraz Khurram Khan
Special Correspondent for ASSIST News Service in Pakistan
Blasphemy accused Shahid Masih with his lawyer, Khalil Tahir
FAISALABAD, PAKISTAN (ANS) -- The lawyer of 17-year old Christian, Shahid Masih, who was accused of blasphemy last month has expressed optimism that his client would be acquitted by the court.
Masihs lawyer, Khalil Tahir told this to ANS on Sunday, October 1.
Shahid Masih was accused by Dr. Arshad Masood, a Muslim, of ransacking his clinic and desecrating outer cover of a religious book that contained translation and interpretation of Quran till Surat-ul-Nisa.
According to the Police First Information Report (FIR), the complainant alleged that on his interrogation Ghaffar confessed that he had committed alleged ransacking and desecration of the religious book along with Shahid Masih.
The FIR was filed in Police Station Sadar, Faisalabad. Shahid Masih and Ghaffar have been charged with 295-B. The alleged desecration of the religious book occurred on September 10 at Chak 208 Rab, Faisalabad.
Talking to ANS Masihs lawyer said Shahids acquittal by the court may take a year due to snail-paced dispensation of cases as well as discriminatory attitude of judiciary in disposing of blasphemy-related cases.
He said the fanatic Muslim clerics also develop pressure on the judges deciding the blasphemy cases by assembling outside the courts.
Khalil Tahir talks to Shahid Masih
The case is fictitious. According to Evidence Act article 38, 39, 40, 43 the statement of any accused cannot be used against any other accused neither in favor nor against him. Therefore, implication of my client in this case is violation of law," said Khalil Tahir, who is defending Masih.
He said he had been defending blasphemy accused pro bono since 1997. When this correspondent asked him how he was satisfying his social self he said: I am a practicing lawyer and I plead other cases as well.
He claimed that he does not charge victims of rape, forced conversions and blasphemy.
Asked what chances he saw of Masihs acquittal, an upbeat Khalil said he was hundred percent sure of Masihs acquittal.
I have made appeals to Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan Federal Law Minister Wasi Zafar, and Rapetteour of UN and also to Defender of Defenders, he said.
When asked to name Christians accused of blasphemy in Faisalabad before Shahid Masih. Khalil said additional Sessions Judge Muhammad Shahid Rafique had convicted one Shahbaz Masih alias Kaka of life in prison in 2004.
Khalil said that the judge convicted the mentally handicapped Christian to life imprisonment despite the fact that article 84 of the Pakistan penal code prohibits the conviction of a person who suffers unsoundness of mind.
The same judge had convicted Ranja Masih who he said was accused of blasphemy.
Shahids family claimed that Masih is innocent, saying Arshad Masood had implicated him in a concocted case.
Asked if they had any rivalry with the complainant they said they were rather enjoying very friendly relations with him.
My husband Munawar, a labourer is the sole breadwinner of the family. He earns Rs 100-150 per day. Implication of Masih in blasphemy case has compounded our economic woes, said Shaids mother Alice, 80.
When I went to see my son in lock up he kept weeping all the time, she said.
We are living in a grip of fear ever since the Dr. accused my son of blasphemy, Shahids father, Munawar told ANS.
Talking to ANS Human Rights Activist and coordinator of Centre for Legal Aid and Assistance (CLAAS) Joseph Francis said that his centres fact finding had revealed that Shahid Masih is innocent and a blasphemy case has been invented against him.

"Al-Qaeda HQ 'based in Pakistan'"
BBC News ^ | Monday, 2 October 2006 | BBC Staff

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A letter found when al-Qaeda's chief in Iraq was killed said the group's leadership was based in Waziristan, Pakistan, the Washington Post reports.
The December 2005 missive is said to be the first to emerge from what the US military calls a "treasure trove" after Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's death in June.
It was reportedly sent by a member of Osama Bin Laden's high command, who said he wrote from Waziristan.
Bin Laden is suspected of hiding along the Afghan-Pakistani border.
If accurate, the letter would confirm the location of the al-Qaeda leadership at the time it was written, the newspaper said."

Document http://70.168.46.200/Released/10-02-06/CMPC-2003-004963.pdf is a coded handwritten letter in English from a person called Amelia Rovena Guadagno to Saddam Hussein dated September 2001. The writer of the coded letter is asking Saddam to Nuclear the United States as required and as soon as possible as this is September 2001. In fact the document later on indicates that this letter was written on or before September 8 2001. I have no idea what this letter means, whether it is a hoax, whether it is true, but someone may find something about it that it is not clear to the naked eye. You can also see the printed format of the letter done by the Pentagon staff by reading document http://70.168.46.200/Released/10-02-06/CMPC-2003-004963-T.pdf :
Below is one part of the coded letter, you may read the remaining from the pdf document:

New indictment returned in terrorism and arms export case
Superseding Indictment in Tamil Tigers Case Adds Attempted Export of Arms and Gun Charges
BALTIMORE, MD -- A federal grand jury has returned indictments today in U.S. v. Osman, et al., and an indictment in U.S. v. Subandi, et al., against the three defendants originally charged by complaint, announced United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein.
"An indictment is a formal statement of charges returned by a grand jury, as required for a defendant to stand trial on felony charges in the United States," said United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein. "These indictments replace the earlier indictment and criminal complaints, and include all of the criminal conduct with which the defendants are charged."
The superseding indictment in U.S. v. Osman, et al., adds Thirunavukarasu Varatharasa, age 36, a citizen of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, as a defendant to the original indictment of Haniffa Bin Osman, Erick Wotulu and Haji Subandi, which was returned under seal in Maryland on September 14, 2006. Varatharasa was originally charged in Guam last week by a criminal complaint.
The superseding indictment re-alleges the facts and charges in the original three-count indictment and adds counts four through six which charge money laundering as to $452,000 transferred from Malaysia to Baltimore on September 28, 2006; attempted export of machine guns, grenade launchers, pistols and sniper rifles from the U.S. to Sri Lanka, also on September 28; and possession of firearms on September 26, 2006 in relation to a crime of violence, specifically, conspiracy to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
The indictment in U.S. v. Subandi, et al., re-alleges facts contained in the complaint filed in Guam last week against defendants Haji Subandi, Reinhard Rusli and Helmi Soedirdja and also alleges that on September 24, 2006 two of the defendants placed night vision devices in luggage which they transported to the Guam airport. They "checked" the luggage on a flight destined for Indonesia on which they were manifested as passengers.
The indictment charges the defendants with conspiracy to export defense articles; money laundering as to $2,950 transferred from Indonesia to Baltimore on August 31, 2006 as partial payment for samples of the night vision devices; and attempted export from the U.S. to Indonesia on September 24, 2006 of night vision devices.
In addition to fines, the defendants face the following potential maximum sentences in federal prison:
Bin Osman, Wotulu, Subandi and Varatharasa:
Conspiracy to Export Arms: 5 years
Conspiracy to Provide Support to a Foreign Terrorist Organization: 15 years
Money Laundering: 20 years on each of the two counts
Attempted Export of Weapons: 10 years
Possession of Firearms in Relation to a Crime of Violence: mandatory 5 years,
consecutive to any other sentence imposed
Subandi, Rusli and Soedirdja:
Conspiracy to Export Defense Articles: 5 years
Money Laundering: 20 years
Attempted Export of Night Vision Devices: 10 years
The defendants' initial appearances in U.S. District Court in Baltimore have not yet been scheduled, and no information is available at this time as to when the defendants will be brought to Maryland.
An indictment is not a finding of guilt. An individual charged by indictment is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceedings.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein praised the investigative work performed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Baltimore City Police Department.
Mr. Rosenstein thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys for the District of Maryland James G. Warwick, Christopher Gramiccioni and Assistant U.S. Attorney Marivic P. David for the District of Guam, who are prosecuting the case; and Assistant U.S. Attorney Harvey Eisenberg, Chief of National Security, who is supervising the case.

"Last Stand For Zimbabwe's White Farmers"

Last stand for Zimbabwe's white farmers By Peta Thornycroft in Karoi (Filed: 04/10/2006)
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A tiny court in a shabby farming town in Zimbabwe was the setting yesterday for a last despairing attempt to stop President Robert Mugabe from evicting the country's few surviving white landowners.
A new law about to pass parliament will, in effect, give the regime power in the next 90 days to dispossess the last few hundred white farmers who still cling to their land.
Two white farming families who have already received eviction letters appealed to the magistrates' court in Karoi to halt the orders.
If the Nel and Terblanche families lose the test case, there will be nothing in law to stop Mr Mugabe from eliminating the surviving white landowners."
