Autopsy: 110 rounds shot at Fla. suspect (my kind of justice)

LAKELAND, Fla. - Officers fired 110 rounds of ammunition at the man suspected of killing a sheriff's deputy, according to an autopsy and records released by the sheriff's office Saturday.

Angilo Freeland — who was suspected of fatally shooting the deputy after being pulled over for speeding Thursday — was hit 68 times by the SWAT team members' shots, the examination showed.

He also was suspected of wounding a deputy and killing a police dog.

Freeland's death ended a nearly 24-hour manhunt that forced schools to lock down and families to stay indoors as about 500 officers scoured the woods.

The wounded deputy had pulled Freeland over for speeding and became suspicious of his identification. The suspect got nervous and bolted into the woods, officials said.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said he was not concerned by the number of shots fired.

"You have to understand, he had already shot and killed a deputy, he had already shot and killed a K-9 and he shot and injured another deputy," Judd said by phone Saturday. "Quite frankly, we weren't taking any chances."

Ten SWAT officers surrounded Freeland on Friday as he hid beneath brush and a fallen tree in a rural area. Authorities say he raised the gun belonging to the deputy he had killed, prompting nine officers to fire.

"I suspect the only reason 110 rounds was all that was fired was that's all the ammunition they had," Judd said. "We were not going to take any chance of him shooting back."

The SWAT officers who shot Freeland have been placed on paid administrative leave, standard procedure in all police shootings.

Also released Saturday were autopsy results for the deputy, Vernon Matthew Williams, 39, which showed he had been shot eight times. He was not wearing a protective vest, but shots hit him in his right leg and behind his right ear, among other places.

Diogi, his German shepherd police dog, was also killed. The dog had been shot once in the chest.

Authorities said deputy sheriff Doug Speirs, also 39, was fired at several times and shot once in the leg. A sergeant and an officer from the Lakeland Police Department were also fired at, authorities said.

They have not yet issued fragmentation grenades to SWAT.
SWAT needs flash, bang AND shrapnel....

Hmm, you suppose the dog went up and bit the body, just to be sure. Hope so.

Or maybe the dog found the perp, or was at least getting too close for comfort.

She said every time he moved she shot him.

And every time she shot him, he moved. Works for me, but juries, especially civil ones, often have different ideas.

Surrounding someone, then opening fire is NOT good tactics. Something about knowing what is behind your target. He was given the chance to surrender and did not, so you want to walk in a handcuff a cop and K-9 killer?
No thanks, not me.
Beside the bad guy was not a war casualty.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Williams was cut down by eight gunshots, one of which was a contact wound, where the muzzle was touching his right temple.

The shots include:

• One shot in his right wrist.

• One shot in his left bicep.

• One shot in his left rear thigh.

• One shot in his right leg.

• One shot in his right buttock.

• One shot in his right upper arm.

• One shot at close range behind his right ear.

• One shot -- a contact wound, where the muzzle was touching his skin -- near his right temple.

The Lakeland Ledger

In case anyone missed this info, Deputy Williams is survived by his wife and three children, a twin son and daughter, 16, and a 19-year-old son. Deputy Williams was shot to death on his wife's birthday.

> When the pulse rate gets exceeds about 150, the fine motor skills go south. Facing an armed cop killer tends to increase the pulse rate.

It's called adrenalyne dump, almost impossible to train against, even for trained martial artists. If they hit the Scroat even once under these circumstances, mighty fine shootin', Lads! That they drilled the Scroat full of 60+ holes, Superb!

No shame in that. Imagine what the Scroat's corpse would have looked like, with 60+ holes drilled into him? Crikey! Doesn't bear thinking about.

> Call it what it was, "A Public Execution". I'm not saying the guy didn't deserve to die, I just think it is questionable if 100 plus shots were needed. It is irresponsible for any group of officers to fire that much at a surrounded individual. When was the last time you heard of a war casualty hit 68 times?

Public Execution!!! Crikey, they didn't HANG him fer Petesake. He was armed, he'd killed police and he was gunned down. This was a varmint shoot. Not an execution.

You obviously left the /sarc tag off, because only a buffoon would question whether the officers present needed to fill this Scroat full of lead. Would you like him running free with firearms in your neighborhood? I wouldn't.

A brave and smart lady is Mrs. Odell. Clyde might've come after her had Bonnie been arrested.

True. Considering the woman was just a teenager when she met Bonnie Parker, she was very cool headed. That's how you get to be a blue haired old lady some day. I see her out puttering in her yard every once in a while. She is still quite a character .

Again, I think it was a good kill. I just question the sensibility of how it was done. If you lived in a very crowded area where only the "Peace" Officers are armed, and realized that they most commonly respond this way when they feel endangered, it makes you a little uneasy as a common citizen.

Check my post 185 and 187 above. The suspect shot the Deputy 8 times. Once with the muzzle of his weapon against his temple. Do the math and you can determine that the nine officers each shot him less than 8 times, and if you listen to the audio, you will see that it happened in 8 seconds. I'll post a pic of where the perp was hidden behind a huge log just to ease your mind about this being a "public execution".

BTW, after speaking with a friend of mine I discovered that this is the officer that responded when I caught someone breaking into my neighbor's business. He was a nice guy and his K-9 partner also lost his life.

110 rounds saves a whole mess o' tax dollars litigating this scumbag.

That is an example of the chain of value of precious metals. It starts with gold. When all the gold is in Rome or Washington, then it is silver, then copper, then zinc. Lead, the "currency of last resort" gets all the other metals back out into the populace, so it can start all over again. Not that this has anything to do with the topic.....

"You and Himler, both."

He would not be taken alive and the officers were not going to murder him with the massive amount of witnesses and news helicopters overhead. The day before, Kathleen High School was locked down with 1600 students nearby. Some students snuck out and one matched the description of the suspect. Black male, white t-shirt, dreadlocks... only the pants were different. They showed this guy jumping a fence near the high school and several cops took him into custody. They didn't shoot him because he didn't point a weapon at them and he put up his hands. I don't have the entire video, but here is a shot of him being loaded into a police car.

Student Video

After this innocent student was taken into custody, you can bet that the search teams were not just going to shoot anything that moved.

Click the picture below to hear the audio of 110 shots fired by nine men in 8 seconds. The perp was hiding behind a large tree, (see photo below). The "overkill" crowd needs to hear this as Deputy Williams was shot 8 times and if you do the math, each of the nine SWAT members average less than that. The weapon he pointed at the police was the sidearm of the Deputy he killed and he had his spare magazine, too.
