A pro-family group has launched a boycott of the Citgo oil company because it is run by the Venezuelan government, which is led by U.S.-bashing President Hugo Chavez.
"Sales of products at Citgo stations send money back to Chavez to help him in his vow to bring down our government," said American Family Association founder Don Wildmon in a statement.

I have noted that Citgo has begun radio spots in some parts of the nation noting Citgo stations are locally owned. Boycotts do hurt. It hurt Exxon right after the Exxon Valdez spilled oil from Prince William Sound.

Why? Because they like Chavez the commie, or because he bashes Bush?

Just pull up to the pump and sit there for 30 seconds, then drive away. That should be sufficient.
To: Uncle Ike
Hi Ike.
At least as of a few years ago there were more Citgo affiliated stations in the United States than any other retailer of ANY type. In other words more Citgo stations than Subways or McDonalds or WalMarts.
Usually Citgo stations tie onto other businesses, especially convenience stores. So you might see a 7-11 sign and under it a large Citgo sign. Or a Grabit-n-Go sign with a large Citgo sign under it.
The point is that while there might be some areas of the country where you can't find Citgo, in most of the country quite the opposite is true.

Why don't we investigate this heating oil boondoggle that costs us billions every year? Now the money is going to chavez as he corners the market.

Michael Savage will claim credit for the idea, and whine because no one else gives it to him.

Savage whines about everyone that won't give him any attention. (but then he already gets more than he deserves).
Buying from someone besides Citgo is not a big deal. There is always plenty of competitors just down the block.

I'm on the fence about this one. There is a Citgo station about a half a mile from my house that is owned/operated by a local family. They have a nice business with 3 bays for car repair,tires,etc.. These folks will be hurting more than Chavez will in a boycott.

Have you approahed your commanding officers
about this? It seems logical that as
Americans, they just might feel the impulse
to deny Chavez our navy's financial support,
too.
The convoluted bind is that the station is
undoubtedly franchized to a solid American
who is just trying to make a buck on his
government contract. And he probably got
the contract through a close friend,
military relative, or political alliance.
Good Luck!

If he really wanted to bring down the US, he'd stop selling us oil.
To: ASA Vet
I really don't see that happening.

I think the only people an effective boycott would harm would be the American employees and retailers of Citgo, from domestic executives down to the truck drivers and service station operators and employees.
Let's face it -- nearly all petro dollars support despotic thug regimes and terrorist enemies of the USA --- Saudi, Iranian, Venezualan, Bolivian, etc.
Our time would be better spent forcing Congress to act on ANWR which would really be a positive step in dealing with the global energy problem.
