ANNAPOLIS, Maryland (AP) -- A national black Republican group is running a radio advertisement accusing Democrats of starting the Ku Klux Klan and saying the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Republican, a claim challenged by civil-rights researchers.
Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, the black Republican nominee for Maryland's open Senate seat, disavowed the ad Thursday as "insulting to Marylanders." He said his campaign asked the Washington-based National Black Republican Association to stop running it.
At an event in Baltimore, Steele said, "I don't know exactly what the intent of the ad was" but that "it's not helpful to the public discourse."
The ad does not mention Steele or his Democratic opponent, Rep. Ben Cardin.
The association's president, Frances Rice, did not return calls for comment. The group, founded a year ago, promotes the Republicans to black voters.
The spot begins with one woman telling another, "Dr. King was a real man. You know he was a Republican."
Steve Klein, a senior researcher with the Atlanta-based King Center, said Thursday that King never endorsed candidates from either party.
"I think it's highly inaccurate to say he was a Republican because there's really no evidence," Klein said.
A King biographer, Taylor Branch, also said Thursday that King was nonpartisan.
In the ad, the woman goes on to say, "Democrats passed those black codes and Jim Crow laws. Democrats started the Ku Klux Klan." Her companion replies, "The Klan? White hoods and sheets?"

Major James R. Crowe CSA or Jim Crow as he is now known was one of the Pulaski Six, the actual founders of the Klan.
Oon April 20, 1871 a Republican Congress enacts the Ku Klux Klan Act, outlawing Democratic Party-affiliated terrorist groups which oppressed African-Americans.
After violence against Republicans in South Carolina, President Ulysses Grant deploys U.S. troops to combat Democrat terrorists who formed the Ku Klux Klan.
Nathan Beford Forrest was at one time the Klans leader until President Grant threaten to have him imprisoned or worse, only then did Forrest disbanded the Klan.
Both Martin Luther King and Ralph Abernathy voted for Republican Dwight Eisenhower for President in 1956. Later after meeting with Dr. King, Eisenhower created The United States Commission on Civil Rights.
Woodrow Wilson, a democrat, was a racist and supportive of the Klan.
A shot across the bow. The message is, "Hey scumbag Democrats - - you want to run those 'black churches will burn' ads? Go ahead, make our day."

There were NO Republicans involved in the founding of the Klan. In fact, one of its reasons for existence was to MURDER Republicans trying to help Freedmen from being RE-enslaved or murdered.
It is absolutely 100% correct that the Klan was the Terror arm of the Southern Democrat Party as it killed its way back to power in the South.

It is false that the riots in NY were by Republicans. In truth the rioters were almost all poor Irish many fresh off the boats who were being integrated into Tammany Hall's DEMOCRAT political machine. The rioters attacked Republicans and Blacks and considered them the protectors of Blacks and the reason the War was being fought.
NYC was RAT run during the War and consistently opposed it and Lincoln.
One set of hands may have a smudge or speck of dirt while the other was dripping with the blood of the tortured and enslaved. There is NO moral equivalency and it is hard to believe anyone who has looked into this would make such a mistake.

If the claims in the ad are true, it is perfectly appropriate to use it. Public discourse DOES need to be aware of the facts or it is useless.
While most people associate Wilson with the North, from his tenure at Princeton, he was actually a Southerner, born in Staunton, Virginia...
