A Venezuelan-owned oil company will warm 12,000 rural Alaska homes this winter with an enormous gift of heating fuel that some elated residents in the Bush call a godsend -- and ironic.
The donation from Houston-based Citgo will buy 100 gallons of fuel for every household in 151 villages. But the gift worth roughly $5 million comes courtesy of a country whose leftist president is pals with America's enemies and supports Iran's nuclear ambitions.
Hugo Chavez also calls our president mean things, such as "genocidal murderer" and "madman."
Margaret Williams of Hughes in the Interior said it doesn't matter who's providing the heating fuel, which costs about $6 a gallon in the Koyukuk River village of 69.
"We sure could welcome it," she said. "As long as we don't have to pay."
In the Kobuk River village of Ambler, heating fuel is running more than $7 a gallon.
Residents in the village of 283 and surrounding villages are ecstatic, said tribal administrator Virginia Commack. "It's a miracle," she said.
Each household will save more than $700 in fuel costs this winter, freeing cash for people to spend on gasoline so they can hunt more caribou and moose, she said.
The donation will especially help the elderly, who live on fixed incomes and can't travel to gather wood, she said.
Daniel Ellanak, a Navy veteran who works for the tribal government on Ouzinkie near Kodiak Island, is inadvertently responsible for the gift, which could provide a couple of months of heating fuel for many homes.
In May, he gave a presentation at a tribal environmental conference near San Diego that touched on village fuel woes, he said.

Don't buy gas at Citgo. Ever.
Sounds like the CITGO office/building on Houston is ripe for a FREEP?
Never again. I can tell you that.
Anyone ever notice that the set background on O'Reilly Factor is a city scene with a prominent CITGO sign in the foreground. No need to give them free ad time.
That sums it all up.
Ugly Americans embarrassing themselves.
Over two billion dollars is going to LIHEAP, so Alaska is doing this....why?!
How is this possible in Alaska where every citizen gets a cash bonus every year from the sale of oil.
How easy to be scornful of others in dire need.
That's the lovely, liberal, socialist background photograph of Boston, MA. Although I must say that Citgo sign has been there in Kenmore Square since the early 60's,when it was still known as City Gas Co.
Jeepers creepers, thanks to LIHEAP, nobody's gonna freeze. Even in Alaska. So they're hopping into bed with Chavez....why?!
47% of Venezuelans live below the poverty line and he's giving oil to Americans. I say let him do it. After all it's probably a Karl Rove conspiracy anyway. |
The pig-face Chavez is bribing the Alaskans. Will this make the govt. cave-in and continue buying their infected oil. It's nasty stuff, just like Chavez and his sulfuric acid self...
WTH are the Feds allowing other foreign governments to make deals like this with other state and local governments. Don't we have Interstate Commerce laws that regualate this type of non sense!
Do you own any stocks that pay dividends? This is exactly what Alaskans receive: A "Dividend check." Why is this such a bad thing? People Outside think we are being paid off, or something, when the truth is, we are shareholders in Alaska's oil production, and the checks are usually less than a thousand dollars.
The villages are incredibly isolated, and any infrastructure is very expensive as a result. Most of the residents of these villages are not working, simply because of the lifestyle. They are hunters, and that is what they do. There aren't enough gas stations, grocery stores, or movie theaters, let alone fast-food places, to hire more than a handful of the villagers. The state probably has several "gift" programs like this in place, but the MSM prefers to give the airtime to the grandstanding of Venezuela's Chavez.
Glad you know what I'm referring to.
They should "Photoshop" the CITGO sign out of the photo!
Seriously, didn't the back of Judge Ito's SONY computer monitor have to be blurred during the O.J. trial becuase SONY was getting free tv ad time?
It's the little things that get to me sometimes ;-)
If Alaskans can take a freebie from a tyrannt, a mad man, a force of evil in the world and an ally of the worst enemies America has ever known and still hold their heads high, then they're not worthy of calling themselves Americans. I'd sooner freeze to death than take a drop of oil from this evil lunatic Chavez, or go bankrupt buying my own oil if that was the only alternative. I'd never, NEVER take a hand out from an enemy of America that said the most vile and disgusting things ever said about an American president by a foreign demagogue. And shame on anyone who does.
I'll take all the gas from Citgo I can get for free.
The time may come that the US just takes it all ...
