Bush: ‘If it’s About Christianity vs. Islam, We’ll Lose’
Outside the Beltway ^ | 9/18/06 | James Joyner

Posted on 09/19/2006 1:42:14 AM PDT by LibWhacker

President Bush told a group of radio talk show hosts that the war on terror must be framed in terms of values, not religion.

Coulter found herself in the uncharacteristic position of being upstaged by her introducer, Mike Gallagher. He told the audience he was fresh back from an hour-and-45-minute session which President Bush held in the Oval Office Friday afternoon with him and four other conservative talk show hosts: Atlanta’s Neal Boortz, Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity and Michael Medved. Rush Limbaugh couldn’t make it, he said.

Though he said this session was supposed to be off the record, Gallagher described it at some length, including Bush’s observation to the right-wing radio jocks that the War on Terror has to be about right versus wrong, “because if it’s about Christianity versus Islam, we’ll lose.”

“Remind me never to invite you to an off-the-record session,” Coulter said after his introduction.

Indeed.

Still, if Bush said what Gallagher said he did, he’s right. Islam is, of course, a big piece of the puzzle. But the battle over ideas has to be fought by finding common moral ground, not bashing Islam in general.

It’s no small irony that this was revealed while introducing, Ann “invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity” Coulter.

"We're IN that position. Allwe can do is see it, and fight for our lives, or deny it, and lose"

Am I misreading you or are you already conceding we have lost the hearts and minds of the moderate Muslim world?

The trick is not to let this thing get out of control.

"because if it’s about Christianity versus Islam, we’ll lose."

You know that sounds like one of those discussions you try to give up something you may believe is necessarily the case to come to agreement about something else. If the report is true he just chose the wrong thing to give up.

Such a notion is also historically false.

But the fact is that not all of them are killing others. Taking out a punishment on a billion people for the actions of thousands, or even millions, should not be done.

It is akin to when Denmark's Jyllen-Posten (spelling?) posted those cartoons and Muslims burned American flags in protest. Although both Denmark and the United States are part of the West, they are not one, solid group (furthermore, not all Danes are Jyllen-Posten people either). And yet those Muslims lumped all Westerners together--and then started acting as if Christians had posted those cartoons (most Danes are nominal Christians who could be mostly agnostic or atheist in reality).

I don't think it was a snub. Any contact between Rush Limbaugh and the President would be seen by the press as a golden opportunity to summon up their "eeevil Rush Limbaugh influencing the gullible President" talk. I suspect that they probably both decided it would be better for Rush not to be there.

Interesting discussion they had with the President. Another reminder to the press, particularly the ones who reach the base, that this war is not on Islam. If that was indeed the gist of their meeting...what's up with it? Private press meeting last night, UN today, timing and message...something is coming sooner than we think?

If Gallagher hadn't opened his yap, the press probably wouldn't have known about the meeting. I don't buy it. Rush should have been there.

"Good point. I'm OK with "good vs Bad" or even "Good vs Evil".."

Truth vs Lies or the Gospel vs Everything else.

The "Everything else" is why liberalism seems allied with Islamofacism. On the surface there should be no common ground but if the goal of each is opposing the truth of the Gospel then they're really on the same team.

"I'm stuck on the Rush thing. He couldn't make it? What did he have to do that's more important than meet the President?"

Rush doesn't consider himself in the same league as the other invitees.

For those who aren't aware, we have Jews, Hindus, Shintos, Muslims, atheists and assorted others on our side against the islamofascists- people of many descriptions who want to worship freely and permit others to do the same. If we alienate those Iraqis and Iranians on our side by giving Ahmaddogonjihad what he wants- a holy war- then our side will become broken and fractured- we will not win.

Thank you. That is worth repeating.

Bush would show poor judgement if he trusted Gallagher a second time.

Can't say I agree with you on any of your points, except the one that not all muslims are out to kill us. All jihaids are, however , out to kill us..

Civilians are the most common targets of jihadis

They are publicly committed to killing all infidels.

I did not try to make the point that all muslims are out to kill "us", but rather was reacting to the statement from the speaker that offered the veiled threeat of 1 billion opponents. Frankly my point was to blunt his veiled threat. I responded with hyprbole.

Let's keep all this in context.

Oh. By the way, do you acknowledge there are muslims who seek to kill 100 million Americans?

Just curious about where you are on you moral equivalency scale.

Right now we have Muslims fighting and aiding us in the fight against evil. Afghanistan and Iraq both prove this true. We DO NOT want to end millions of Muslims fighting with us by embracing a Holy War. I thought that way myself until I realized that in watching "Path to 9/11", there were Muslims that save American lives... many of our lives!

President Bush is right about this, and I was previously wrong about it.

No. You were right about it and Bush's statement is wrong.

Read the Koran, read the Haddiths, listen to the silence from the Islamic clerics, and the Muslims of America or their vitriolic speeches against us.

NAME ONE MUSLIM CLERIC WHO SUPPORTS US.

If Muslims are aiding us, they are doing so for the same reasons they "aided" us in Afghanistan against the Russians - personals interests or internal factionalism.

But in the long run, their gaol is to Islamicize the world - read the writings of Sharon from Israel - he explains it so anyone can understand it.

Muslims believe it is a religious DUTY to expand Islam over the non0Islamic world, to reduce non-Muslims to second class citizenship, to impose Sharia law on the world and to accomplish the directives of their paedophilic bandit founder.

If Bush is stating this for international political reasons - it might make some sense. If he really believes it, he's delusional and we are in more trouble than I thought.

I guess that's because beeing hysteric is not limited to those well fed and protected but can infest those who are blamed for all evil in the world right now and can't cut the mustard against well equipped and strong western soldiers.

Frankly it never corssed my mind to let a freak like armedinedjad have his way nor am I a too big fan of old men with bad teeth calling out the day of rage and fury.

On the other hand I do live in germany and in my hometown there are all kinds of muslims selling groceries, working in ensurance companies, teaching arabic at the university, building parellel cultures or integrating in our society in a way they get consultants for mc kinsey, studying nuclear technology - you know - stuff like that.

They are not they. They are all very different and certainly don't fit in these good and bad boxes all together.

It's not like you believe in allah and in that moment you have to bring down christendom or mankind or such - although there are such people.

Why o why is it so hard for some characters to differenciate on this very easy very low intellectual level ?

Some freepers cannot live through the day without spreading their wisdom about the holocaust and the unbelievable attrocities done to the jews that served as the scape goats for every evil in the german society for 12 years.

Why is it possible to know about this depressing failure of the ancient german society and still make the same mistake with muslims and throw them all in the same sack ?

It will only turn out - as Mr Bush said at first that you don't have a sack big enough and in secound that it certainly isn't justice or leading to a desirable aim.

focus on terror - torture - drug smuggeling - cultural opression by muslims - but not on islam as such. There is no religion right or wrong and if there was then we had to start with the exorcism of Tom Cruise - not Ali my local tomato dealer.

There certainly is noone thinking otherwise.

And stop asking Islam and Muslims to apologize or distance themselfes of the attacks of 9/11 because many of them have. Just google it.

The pope was right though.

I thought that way myself until I realized that in watching "Path to 9/11", there were Muslims that save American lives... many of our lives!

And I realized how many Muslims actually have died for our cause since 9/11, starting from when the first plane hit the WTC. There must have been Muslims among the nearly 3,000 who died, as well as members of other faiths... all of them were innocent victims, not just the Christians.

And, as we continue in the WOT, there are SO many that are fighting on our side, not just in the mountains of Afghanistan or the streets of Baghdad. And many will remain faceless, for their own safety. This doesn't diminish their sacrifice. For example... how many tips were turned in, in order to find Zarqawi?
