Future articles by Buchanan should be banned from FR.
Pat is a voice of reason on many issues that the Bush WH insanely ignores. Banning Pat articles would not benefit the debate that needs to be held in the open marketplace...the borders need to be shut...and Bush is doing nothing about it.
Facts are facts.

"Well .. so far the House has stepped up to the plate and written and passed legislation to build a border fence. I think the vote was 235 to 138. How long this will take and how this info will prod the terrorists to do their next attack early, may be in our favor .. as their rush to beat the fence may cause them to make many mistakes."
And, when asked about the House vote, Bush replied (in double-talk) about the need for a "comprehensive" program, meaning no increased border security without guest workers and amnesty.

Some poeple will say anything to sell a book. A pity, because it's a good book.

"Well .. so far the House has stepped up to the plate and written and passed legislation to build a border fence"
Merely posturing. the House did this in the full knowledge that without someone taking a flamethrower to the Senate, that no fence will actually be built. They (House Republicans) can now campaign safely ensured that they have "addressed" one of their constituent's pet peeves, and that if their opponents point it out, that they have the high ground in the debate. They will also be able to go to their contributors (the construction, landscaping, tourism, restaurant, etc, industries) and say, with a straight face, "Hey, you know it's only for appearance's sake. Keep the checks coming!".
No fence will ever be built in the current political climate. Cynicism and opportunism replace courage and is called a virtue. A very easy-to-manufacture win-win situation for any House Republican who's seat was threatened.
The solution is not in fences, nor in legislation; it is in making manual labor attractive to those Americans who might not have a job, but who won't take sled dog's wages with no apparent benefits. Better to tie those jobs to some tangible benefit, and let those who want to work for it.
In the meantime, enforce the existing laws before we pass new ones.

As practically the entire House and Senate are just as culpable, how would they arrange that?

Does anyone really care what Buchanan has to say about anything? Just the media who delight in presenting him as the standard by which all Republicans are measured.

You're right. Many have been busy attacking Buchanan, but no one has successfully attacked the message of the book.
Reading this thread makes me think Dane has been cloned a dozen times.

Here is the key statement made by Buchanan in the cited article:
"When you have 6 million people apprehended on the border and several million got in on your watch - and you have the ability to stop it - I think you're derelict in your duty," he said. "And if the President says 'I can't do it,' you need a new President who will do it."
I don't see how anyone who cares about the protection of our borders could disagree with Buchanan on this point.
I don't think Bush should be impeached, but I am very disappointed in him on this issue. I think Bush has been a good president in many ways, but I also think he is totally disconnected from the vast majority of Republicans on the issue of illegal immigration. When you consider the national security risks that a de facto open borders presents it is truly maddening that a Bush would let it go on year after year. There is simply no good excuse for that. In 08 we need a President who will address the problem in a serious fashion and with a sense of urgency.
To: EveningStar
So Pat thinks Cheney will do more to tighten the border? And that Cheney would run in '08 for POTUS?
