Mark for later.
Good -- he gets to comment on McCain's premise.
Do we need the program?
I believe we need the program.
Why do I keep thinking that there is more behind that line than the surface?
Lock and load...
He is NOT backing down and he is STILL MAD! I love it when he gets that squiunty-eyed West Texas look. HA!
Did he say this is Helens last presser? Be sill my heart...
Bush: We didn't ask for this war. The enemy wants to strike us again and we'll give our folks tghe tools to protect the country. It's a dangerous world. I wish I could tell the American people don't worry about it, but they're coming again.
The facts are that after 9/11 the enemy continued to attack and kill innocent people. They're bound by a common ideology. They want to impose that ideology in the ME - that's what they've said. We should listen to the words of the enemy. So we have to stay ahead of them.
?: What do you say to the argument that the plan would put US troops at risk - that's what McCain says.
Bush: The SCOTUS ruling says we have to conduct ourselves under Article 3 of the Geneva Convention which means no outrages upon human dignity. It's very vague. What does that mean. It's wide open to interpretation so I'm proposing clarity in the law so our professionals will have no doubt that what they're doing is legal.
It's a piece of legislation I sent to provide our professionals that which isneeded to go forward. We first have to ask if we need the program and I detailed in the East Room what kind of information we've gotten from the interrogations. SOmetimes you can pick up info from letters but sometimes you have to question people. In this case we questioned KSM who ordered the attacks on 9/11. Cold blooded killers who were part of the planning of the 9/11 victims.
I thank God EVERY day that this man is in office and doing what is right for this country. God really put the right man in charge at the right time.
Go Bush!!!
The new Willie Horton?
I wish Bush would clearly say:
"AL QUEDA HAS NOT SIGNED ON TO THE GENEVA CONVENTIONS...ANY BETS IF THEY EVER WILL????
DON'T BE STUPID!!"
Agreed. He was sitting on that fastball.
Standards are so vague. He's right.
Bush: The Court says we have to live under Article 3 of the GC which means the professionals could be tried under international law. They expect our goverment to give them clarity under the law and that's what we've asked Congress to do.
We believe it's good to work on McCain amendment called Detainee Treatment Act.
W is fired up and he is putting the pansy 4 rinos in their place. Who were NOT elected by the majority in our country.
President Bush was!!! Twice!!!
There is nothing in what he is saying that any halfway intelligent, clear thinking person cannot understand.
If I were his aide I would be hiding under my desk this afternoon. :)
Steve Holland of Reuters: "Senator McCain says your plan puts troops at risk."
Prez: "What I'm proposing is that there be clarity in the law so that our professionals will have not doubt that what they are doing is legal......sometimes you can pick up information on the battlefield....but sometimes you have to question people to find out the plans of the enemy....covert killers who are part of the planning that killed 3,000 people....These are decent honorable people who want to protect our people and want their government to give them the authority to do so....
He just mentioned John McCain again.
Ditto.
People on front protecting our people. They need clarity to question the enemy. It's more clarity for professionals. Decent citizens do not want to break the law.
"... humiliating and degrading treatment;"
&&&&&
To a Jihadist, just looking at them, and not converting to Islam is considered to be degrading and humiliating them.
Our handling of detainees HAS to be spelled out.
Bush: Our professionals could be subject to court decisions in other countries and I don't believe Americans want that.
