Sorry to say that I don't know. I sure hope not. The Army may have kept it on the QT. If the media knew about it, it would be the only think they covered 24/7.

Bush To Hold Rose Garden News Conference

UPDATED: 6:44 am PDT September 15, 2006

WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush plans to hold a broadcast news conference this morning to answer GOP lawmakers who've rejected his rules for trying and questioning terror suspects.

The 11:15 a.m. EDT Rose Garden session comes a day after the Senate Armed Services Committee passed its own version of rules -- that Bush says he can't accept.

The president says his rules would clarify fuzzy language in the Geneva Conventions' ban on abusive treatment. But Sen. John McCain -- who was tortured in Vietnam -- said Bush's bill actually undermines Geneva, and would put captured U.S. troops at risk. McCain's view is backed by ex-Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Powell said Bush's proposal to redefine the Geneva Conventions would encourage the world to "doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism" and "put our own troops at risk."

Bush said without a clarification, the CIA would have to shut secret interrogation centers abroad -- and the American people would be endangered.

The rebels also object to Bush's rules for military trials for detainees that allow use of coerced testimony -- and bar defendants from seeing secret evidence against them.

It will be Bush's first news conference since Aug. 21, when he said the Iraq war was "straining the psyche of our country" but that leaving now would be a disaster. Bush has made the struggle against terrorism and the war in Iraq the top issues in the November elections, hoping to persuade voters that Republicans are better than Democrats at protecting the country.

"The Washington Post wrote in an editorial on Friday that Bush was basically lobbying for torture and that the CIA wants permission to interrogate detainees "with abusive practices that in the past have included induced hypothermia and 'waterboarding,' or simulated drowning."

Utterly false. The White House is lobbying for clarification of Article 3, and specific guidelines. Because if we leave definitions up to our courts in their current state, we know what happens. Anything goes.

Senators McCain, Warner, Graham, and Collins simply do not want to protect our troops, and give them that clarification.

Ah, yes---and celebrate they should!!

You have the 2 main POTUS candidates in 2008 acting like they are just gonna mollycoddle the terrorists in the future.

If I were any terrorist group...I would lay low, and just do a strike now and then to let the US know we are here...but, just wait until Jan. 2009. Then they will have any all "rights" they need to take over this country.

Senators McCain, Warner, Graham and Collins are taking a stance as if the terrorists were actually a defined army and would treat US prisoners better when captured.

US Treatment: loud rock music, free food and health care, and a copy of the Koran Krap-ran.

Jihadi treatment of US prisoners: brutal torture and death; Burning and beheading optional.

Yeah, makes sense to me - no need to pi** the terrorists off and raise the anger level of the Islamic cultists [yeah, I know it's redundant...]

I wonder if maybe he gave somebody up and it could be related to this news conference?

No, but Ney's guilty plea is a sad commentary on our Republican leadership. It makes one look hard for others who may be dirty...

If Ney is dirty, then anyone is suspect, and that makes me ill.....He stood with his face to the camera and protested his innocence, only a few months ago. A very bad day for the Ohio delegation.

It would appear. Our Senate should be defending America and America's Military not offering America and America's Military up to be raped, sodomized, and slaughtered.

My point is that the enemy "soldiers" (according to Common Article Three of the Geneva Convention) [end sarcasm] do not take prisoners! They MUTILATE AND KILL American soldiers. The entire premise of Warner/McCain/Powell/Graham, etc argument is STUPID. We are not fighting people who are "soldiers" They are TERRORISTS.

PS: I am not yelling at you. I am screaming in frustration at what the above named cretins are doing to our fighting forces.

I watched part of the hearing yesterday, then had to change the channel. They don't have hearings anymore...they just have campaign speeches while in session.
