E.Coli Outbreak Kills One In US Last Edited: Thursday, 14 Sep 2006, 9:00 PM CDT Created: Thursday, 14 Sep 2006, 8:40 PM CDT
An outbreak of E.coli that may be linked to bagged fresh spinach has killed one person and left another 50 sick.
The United States Food and Drug Administration has issued a nationwide warning to consumers not to eat bagged fresh spinach.
The death occurred in Wisconsin where 20 other people were also hit.
Seven other states, including Connecticut, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon and Utah, have also been hit by the outbreak.
FDA officials have said they do not know the source of the outbreak other than it appeared to be linked to bagged spinach.
The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and Wisconsin health officials alerted the FDA about the outbreak on Wednesday.
Early reports suggest the same bug is responsible for the outbreak in all eight states.
Most healthy adults can recover within a week, although some people, including the very young and old, can develop a form of kidney failure that often leads to death.
E.coli lives in the intestines of cattle and other animals and typically is linked to contamination by fecal material.
It causes an estimated 73,000 cases of infection, including 61 deaths, each year in the US.
Bump
I have been eating frozen, cause I love me Creamed Spinich, even though my wife has Mini Maxed it to nothing.....
This is why I love Free Republic - thank you for posting the article. I've just tossed out the bag of fresh spinach sitting in my fridge here in CT, one of the affected states. I never would have seen this in the MSM.
Note to file:
1.Continue refusing to eat spinach, raw, boiled, steamed, broiled, fricaseed, stewed, in a casserole, chilled, or as a garnish.
2.Continue enjoying a juicy ribeye, minus spinach on the plate.
3.Match wine with beef, refuse any wine that a sommelier would recommend for spinach.

Would it kiil the E.coli if the spinach were washed in a water-bleach solution?
What brand?
Yep! I just KNEW that spinach wasn't good for you!!!VINDICATED!!:)
You are welcome.
Saw that a little too late. I'm sure in this case, the double post won't hurt.
"Would it kiil the E.coli if the spinach were washed in a water-bleach solution?"
Probably because bleach kills most bacteria, but I think I'll just pass on the fresh spinach for a while...
"What brand?"
They don't know...they are advising consumers not to eat any fresh bagged spinach. Earlier, I had heard on the radio about spinach from Selinas, CA, but I'm certain they don't know anything for sure...

That's an interesting question. These are "pre-washed" products. The contamination is wide. What could they have in common? My guess they were washed at the same place and the water got contaminated in the tub or whatever the ag industry calls the washing places.
If I don't pluck it, then *uck it.
Beef, it's what's for...hell, anytime.
it shouldnt matter that something this important is posted more than once. maybe some people wouldnt have seen the other thread. sometimes you double-post cops are too much.
Oh yes, little to add, lack of inspiration or the vocabulary needed, all reasons for the double-post cops to erupt, much like the Taliban exoriating the unbeliever.
Thank goodness, FR does not strive to achieve such sanctimonious pureness.
I not being a cop... I was only letting the poster know that it was already posted on FR. I was not mean to them or acting like a cop.
Thanks for the post, we eat steamed spinach weekly and this turns my stomach.
Fortunately we were poor this week and I ate alot of pasta, very little veggies.
Alright folks...lets just move along...nothing to see here...LOL.
Sorry officer, couldn't resist :)
