Probably because bleach kills most bacteria, but I think I'll just pass on the fresh spinach for a while...

That's an interesting question. These are "pre-washed" products. The contamination is wide. What could they have in common? My guess they were washed at the same place and the water got contaminated in the tub or whatever the ag industry calls the washing places.
On the other hand, I'm wondering how many millions of Americans ate raw spinach last month, and didn't get sick, and didn't die...

Late news reports indicate the germ is in the structure of the plant and won't wash off. I imagine cooking it in soup for at least 15 minutes would work. Fifteen minutes boiling will even kill resistant Shighella (sp?), a very nasty gut bug.
