GRAND RAPIDS -- The latest EPIC-MRA poll, released just 54 days before the November 7 general election, shows statewide incumbents are holding the lead.

The poll, exclusive to 24 Hour News 8 and our media partners, sampled 600 people between September 7 -12, and includes a margin of error of 4 percent.

Governor Jennifer Granholm holds an 8-point lead, 50-42, over Republican nominee Dick DeVos. It's the second consecutive poll Granholm has held a lead bigger than margin of error. In the previous poll, Granholm led 49-42.

In the race for the US Senate, incumbent Debbie Stabenow has opened a 19-point lead, 53-34, over GOP candidate Mike Bouchard.

I have heard that EPIC/MRA leans a bit to the left... but certainly not enough to make a 19 point measured lead into a competitive race. Stabenow's lead has grown six points from the last EPIC-MRA poll. The gubernatorial race, though, may still hold a glimmer of hope for DeVos.

MI Senate trendlines:
09-12 EPIC-MRA ........ Stabenow +19
08-31 Rasmussen .......... Stabenow +8
08-30 Selzer & Co. ....... Stabenow +13
08-27 Strategic Vision ... Stabenow +7
08-22 EPIC-MRA ........ Stabenow +13

The koolaid drinkers are desperate to have more damage done to their state economies, I guess.

I would just love to see what the numbers would be if Detroit wasn't factored in.

A poll of 600 "people"? What the heck does that mean? Anyone who answered the phone (whether citizen or non-citizen), registered voters, likely voters?

I'm guessing that this poll doesn't have much value.

Great job Michigan! Sorry about having the worst economy in the country though. I just can't understand that, when you keep electing such incredible politicians!

A poll of 600 "people" is meaningless. There is not even stipulation that they are adults, much less registered voters.

Honestly I think thats just sloppy reporting on the part of the newspaper.

I'll check around and see what I can find out.

"What is WRONG with my state"

West Michigan is beautiful, and I lived there for 9 years. I just went back for the first time in three years for the Coast Guard festival. I traveled by car from CO to MI, and lo and behold Michigan had the highest gas prices around. The number of properties for sale were staggering as well as the number of small businesses closed etc. I would love to move back to West Michigan some day, but I can't afford it

And how many people answer a land line telephone these days? Everyone I know has a cell phone, an answering machine of some kind to filter calls, or uses e-mail/ faxes.

Well, at least as far as the gas prices are concerned, that has always been more or less true.

I remember coming home on leave from Mtn. Home, ID in 1979, at the time that gasoline just broke the $1.00 mark and many pumps couldn't even handle three digit per gallon prices.

On my trip home and back, Idaho had the lowest gasoline prices, and Michigan was near, but not always at the top.

How in the world does Granholm suddenly reverse a trend of losing support, to suddenly gaining it? There's a 10-point difference there. I'm not sure this last poll is accurate here.

Although, the only issue the Dems have been hitting is the whole China thing. If that's the only real thing they got, it'll sound old and broken by the time they get to November, especially if DeVos keeps ads with what really happened.

At least, that's my analysis. I've been wrong before (although i seriously hope I'm not wrong here).

MGY

The poll, exclusive to 24 Hour News 8 and our media partners, sampled 600 people between September 7 -12, and includes a margin of error of 4 percent. Governor Jennifer Granholm holds an 8-point lead, 50-42, over Republican nominee Dick DeVos.
So, subtracting the 4 per cent margin of error from Granholm would increase DeVos by 4 per cent (since the total is 100 per cent), meaning the race is a dead heat, and the poll was spun before the first person was ever contacted. :')
