Gay Activists Arrested During Sit-In at Marine Recruiting Station
Three people who staged a protest to draw attention to the military's policy not to accept openly gay members were arrested in Shreveport today after they occupied a Marine recruiting station and refused to leave.
The arrests came after two openly gay people tried to enlist in the Marines. A recruiter at the Mansfield Road station -- citing the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy -- told them they couldn't join after volunteering information they were gay.
The two activists and about a dozen supporters staged a sit-in outside the office. When the recruiter went to his car for a minute, protesters moved inside. Police were called, three refused to leave and were arrested.
The activists were part of a nationwide effort by a group of young gay activists challenging the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
Rachel Powell and Eddie Lopez went to the Marine recruiting office last week and tired to enlist. They came back today.
"I guess what Eddie and I have not mentioned is that were both openly gay," Rachel Powell told Marine Sgt. Lewis Vado.
"I can't sign you up," Vado replied. "It's a law from Congress and I can't change that. Nothing against anyone; it's just the law and I can't do anything to change that. I'm just a Marine."
"We don't except no for an answer just because we're gay," Powell said. "So we're going to sit here and be the next in line to serve and just wait."
The protesters initially conducted a sit-in outside the recruiting office. They went inside and staged a sit-in when Vado went to his car to get something.
Police were called and asked them to leave.
"Your point has been made. This is private property and the (Marine) has asked you to leave. I'm asking you as a person right now to please leave. It would help the situation a whole lot, it really would," Lt. Steven Robinson said.
The two protesters and one supporter, Rayda Hall, would not leave and were arrested for entering and remaining. They were later released from jail on bond.

Oy. Don't journalists go to school anymore?
arrested for their own good. a form of pre-emptive protective custody, I would hope.
Is a homosexual having a sit-in like wearing a chastity belt?
I would love to see the faces of these young "activist"
if one the recruiters would just say "ok" and start filling out their paperwork.....Bet they wouldn't sit there for long!
One of Bill Clinton's first acts as President!!
in order to save space the 3 perps turned over a 3 legged bar stool in order to have the sit-in.....film at 11
Don't EDITORS edit anymore?..........
Couldn't we have a "Gay Only" division in the military? Troop uniforms and morale would be just FABULOUS!...........inmagine, PINK CAMMIES.........
What would the chant at the sit-in? "Hell no, we won't blow!"?.....
One of these was a girl gay (cough cough).
Whell, this thread is useless without pictures!!!

.......Turn your head and cough.......
It depends on what they are sitting on.
All that has to be done is to order the police to NOT see anything - the Marines will keep the peace.
Sure they really wanted to join the Marines. Pansy boys thought they could really make it through boot camp and basic infantry school with all of those mean people with funny hats yelling at them. They really wanted one of those stylish haircuts, too.
Candy-asses like this and other limp-wristed lefties are doing their best to wreck our established civilization; apparently they don't realize that they will be the ones to suffer the most if our "polite society" crumbles.
Come on. Expecting them to use common sense and reason? Boy, will they be in for a big surprise.
Unfortunately, we all rely on "spellcheckers" on our computers so much now that we forget about syntax, usage and other fine points of the English language. A "spellcheck only" would not have found this mistake, as it is spelled correctly. I'm sure there are programs available that do check grammer.......(sic)
