Notoriously independent-minded Rhode Island Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee confronts stiff opposition Tuesday in his bid for a second term, the latest race with a moderate targeted by his own party's hard-line critics.
While a total of nine states and Washington, D.C., were holding primary elections, Chafee's race is drawing the most attention as another test of the depth of anti-incumbent sentiment and the erosion of the political middle ground.
Update courtesy of RobFromGa in #70:
Here are websites where you can find the results for eight of the nine primaries being held today. The link for Vermont may not be working just yet. I believe it should be up and running by this evening.
I think you will be correct!
What happened in Michigan? Didn't catch it, but I am interested.
Can shadow voters have a say in the election of shadow congress critters?
**Forget that, when did Chafee ever have a MIND ?**
LOL! *Did the dims take it?*
TIM WALBERG, CLUB FOR GROWTH PAC-ENDORSED CANDIDATE, DEFEATS REP. JOE SCHWARZ (MI-07) TO WIN GOP PRIMARY
First Ever Club-PAC Primary Victory Against An Incumbent
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In its first-ever primary victory against an incumbent, the Club for Growth PAC extended its record to 7 wins and 2 losses when challenger Tim Walberg defeated incumbent Representative Joe Schwarz today in Michigan's seventh district. Michigan Republican voters sent a clear message to Congress that they are tired of the big-spending, big-government policies that contributed so much to Joe Schwarz's downfall.
"Michigan voters made it clear that they still want Congress to limit government, reduce wasteful spending and cut taxes," said Pat Toomey, President of the Club for Growth. "The Club for Growth PAC is proud to have played a major role in helping Tim deliver his pro-growth, winning, message."
The Club for Growth PAC endorsed Walberg early in his race and raised over $600,000, from Club members, in contributions to the Walberg campaign. In addition, the Club for Growth PAC spent over $500,000 in independent expenditures including hard-hitting TV and radio ads that underscored Joe Schwarz' liberal record on economic issues.
"Our ads focused almost exclusively on the need to cut taxes and spending. The final ad we ran had a huge impact," Toomey said.
"Rep. Schwarz was one of the worst examples of Republican politicians who have abandoned any real commitment to limited government and pro-growth policy," Toomey concluded. "But Michigan voters have responded by electing to replace him with a true economic conservative who will work to enact the pro-growth agenda. We look forward to seeing Tim Walberg win in November and then serving in Washington in the 110th Congress."
All around conserative challenger Walberg knocked off one term RINO Congressman Schwartz in the primary.
2 years ago Schwartz won the R primary with less than 30 percent of the vote, it was a six man race. This time around it was one on one and Walberg and the Club for Growth beat out Schwartz and the entire GOP establishment, including Bush and McCain. It's a very safe house seat and the Dim only has a thousand bunks on hand as of last filing.
Bye bye, Link.
Thanks for the updates.
I guess the Moderator made this a live thread. (I only talked about the possibility. Thanks.
Maryland already botched their primaries by 8 this morning. Montomgery and Baltimore counties (yes - both fairly rabid Dem) didn't open on time, turned people away and Montco forgot to send out the voter cards for the machines.
Republicans don't stand a chance in races in DC, so it will be between two (D) candidates in that city. Fenty will probably win over Cropp (looks like the endorsement of the current mayor won't help her).
Right. I really see no reason or justification for the party to get involved in primaries at all!

If anyone on here has Facebook, look at Lincoln Chafee's profile on there. You'll see every comment says something like "I'm a Democrat, but you're the only Republican I'd vote for." On that note, don't donate to the NRSC.
You don't live in the real world do you ? Chaffee is to the left of most republicans, but republicans are about 35% of the people. the rest are democrats to the left of chaffee and moderates which is about where chaffee is.
The republican party asked laffey not to get into this race.
So it is laffey's fault.
Bye bye, Link!
So it is laffey's fault.
I think I'm going to be sick...
That type of thinking is exactly the problem with the GOP today. The party bosses say heel, or else - and its just about always in favor of the most leftward candidate (electablity, dontcha know). No thanks.
This is precisely why Club For Growth is so important, and why RINOs need to be pummeled at every opportunity. The enemy within is much more dangerous than your known enemy.
Here's to Laffey and RI voters sending the Missing Linc into early retirement today.
