(CBS) When the Senate Intelligence Committee released a declassified version of its findings this past week, the Republican chairman of the committee, Pat Roberts, left town without doing interviews, calling the report a rehash of unfounded partisan allegations.
Its statements like this one, made Feb. 5, 2003, by then-Secretary of State Colin Powell that have become so controversial, implying Iraq was linked to terror attacks.
"Iraq today harbors a deadly terrorist network headed by abu Musab al-Zarqawi, an associated collaborator of Osama bin Laden and his al Qaeda lieutenants," Powell said.
But after 2 1/2 years of reviewing pre-war intelligence behind closed doors, the lead Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, Sen. John Rockefeller (D-W.V.), who voted for the Iraq War, says the Bush administration pulled the wool over everyone's eyes.
"The absolute cynical manipulation, deliberately cynical manipulation, to shape American public opinion and 69 percent of the people, at that time, it worked, they said 'we want to go to war,'" Rockefeller told CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson. "Including me. The difference is after I began to learn about some of that intelligence I went down to the Senate floor and I said 'my vote was wrong.'"
Rockefeller went a step further. He says the world would be better off today if the United States had never invaded Iraq even if it means Saddam Hussein would still be running Iraq.
He said he sees that as a better scenario, and a safer scenario, "because it is called the 'war on terror.'"
(No more Olmert! No more Kadima! No more Oslo! )
Libs would just love to see Iraqis being tortured, murdered and gassed again under Saddam. The DNC would gladly pay any price to defeat Republicans and spite Bush, they would even destroy Iraqi freedom and AMERICA to get back into power.
in power???
WOW!!!!
good....just what America needs to hear from a demonrat
I've pondered what Clinton's reaction would have been if Saddam's assassination attempt was successful. I think it would have involved some heavy bombings but that's all.
This is like a dispute over the crown of a nation and one contender makes an alliance with his nation's sworn enemy just to get his hands on it.
It would have, had there been tents and uninhabited aspirin plants available to attack.
No camel in the area would have been safe from Missile attack.
I guess his back has healed? It seems his mind has only become more poisoned.
On A & E starting now there is a new show about the WTC on 9/11...a new documentary..
Pres.Bush should go on Television Monday night and tell it like it is, no more Mr congenial.
My fellow Americans and illegal aliens; five years ago terrorists struck our cities. Innocent people at their desks one minute , next had to choose between fire and jumping. How do you make a choice like that? Children on planes cuddled with their parents on those planes parents who hoped they would merely land on a tarmac and listen do demands for a few hours. instead their families where disintegrated into skyscrapers at 530 mph. The country stood firm in our grief. Yet In just five years the war on terror is a shambles because of the left wingers treason.
-on sept 11th, 2001 the country stood firm with its Commander in chief to wipe out terrorists. Democrats announced they would put partisanship aside and back the president. That lasted a few months at best. For political gain :
-Leftists in the media have since poisoned the public against american self defense, against interrogation, against the commander in chief.
-They have used censorship to keep the truth of 9/11 in a haze.
-They have repeatedly whitewashed the previous administrations utter contempt for national defense and disregard for the threats of Al Queda in the 90's.
-They warped for partisan reasons the 9/11 commission
-The stole incriminating documents.
-They sent false investigators to Nigeria to cover up Iraqis uranium purchases.
-They liabled me about prewar intelligence. We have found tons of uranium in Iraq, dozens of chemical warheads and discovered incriminating documents that linked Saddam to Al Zarqawi and WMD.
-They instigated libelous investigations of the white house which turned up nothing
-We can no longer question terrorists because they twisted my arm to grant geneva convention to un-uniformed sappers who are clearly not protected under any convention, nor representing a signator of said treaties.
-We can't imprison terrorists without constant howling from their allies on the left.
-We can't try them in court because state secrets would have to be revealed to their aclu funded lawyers.
-We can't finish the job properly in iraq due to the left
-We can't monitor their bank transactions for laundering.
-We can't wiretap calls from a cave in pakistan to unknown individuals in the states despite a long history of wartime presidents intercepting foreign transmissions
-Leftists have lied for years that they can fight terrorism more effectively by not monitoring the banks, the plane flights, the phones, the internet and by pulling the rug out from under Maliki. In a sense, The passengers of flight 93 gave their lives to protect these traitors.
-Therefore my fellow americans I can no longer effectively do my job to protect you in the present state. I ask you to support your country by re-electing your republican representatives ...etc etc
I saw the whole thing,I was shocked, and I wish CBS would provide a like to it.
(No more Olmert! No more Kadima! No more Oslo! )
If Saddam were still in power .. The UN and their buddies would still be raking in the $$$ bribes from the Oil for Food Scandal
May G_d help us with people like this in positions of power in this country. I am watching Flight 93 on cable. I was not able to do it until now. I'm going through all the stuff that those of us who love this country and are just basically decent people do when they see this. I wish I was young enough for the military, but I'm not.
Thanks! I'm going to go watch.
Be back later :-)
They value power over anything
And I'm sure the UN would have sent Saddam a very testy note.
The question is did he say this on his own or did he get the go ahead from the DNC? I guess we'll know soon.
