The Battle for the Soul of the YMCA

Do you know what the C in YMCA stands for?

You may know it stands for “Christian,” but I wouldn’t be surprised if you didn’t. The YMCA has come far from its founders’ intent when it was organized in 1844—so far that many people have forgotten its roots as a Christian organization established to disciple young men. Today, as John Alexander of the Danville, Illinois, YMCA says, “Unfortunately, people look at us and just see a swim and gym.”

“I respect your religion. But when I see posters and placards on the wall that reflect Christian principles, I feel left out. . . . It offended me, and I don’t think it’s right for the Y.”

A quote from one of the participants at the YMCA convention.

Well, then he doesn't need to join the Y. It's a private organization and anyone is free to join, or not join. Nobody is forcing him to go there. If he doesn't like it, he can join another gym instead of forcing everyone to capitulate to his poor, offended feelings ***whine***

A whole lot of people in this world need to get over it and get a life.

And how about if a someone complained.....

But when I see posters and placards on the wall that reflect Christian male principles, I feel left out. . . . It offended me, and I don’t think it’s right for the Y.”

Or perhaps

But when I see posters and placards on the wall that reflect Christian young people's principles, I feel left out. . . . It offended me, and I don’t think it’s right for the Y.”

What part of Young Men's Christian Association didn't he get? He also knew that when he joined.

"What part of Young Men's Christian Association didn't he get? He also knew that when he joined."

With the local Y's there isn't much of the young men christian part. They do have a VERY small chapel but the whole facility is basically just another health club.

One lady I know who worked at a YMCA resigned her position of church leadership because the church was taking a stance against abortion. She felt the church would conflict with her work at the Y.

>>>...It offended me...<<<

This little mantra is the most potent weapon in the war on American unity that the Lefties, Feminists, and the homosexuals are waging on us. These people are the "fifth column" in the War Against America.

As they say, the YMCA is neither exclusively for the young, nor for men, nor for Christians. I assume it is an association.

But it’s an uphill fight. At the YMCA convention, ideas like posting Bible verses on the wall or maintaining a prayer request box met with disapproval from many. Dick Blattner of the Hollywood, Florida, YMCA, complained, “I respect your religion. But when I see posters and placards on the wall that reflect Christian principles, I feel left out. . . . It offended me, and I don’t think it’s right for the Y.”

Only in today’s hypersensitive society could a leader in an organization with Christian in its name be offended by Christianity. But it reminds us what happens when Christians sell out our core principles and abandon our worldview for the sake of “success.” Take this as a cautionary tale and support those who are trying once again to “lift up the C” in the YMCA.

It would appear that the one who made this statement wasn't just a member, but in a leadership role.

I thought the battle had been thoroughly lost, nice to see there is a "confessing YMCA" movement.

The Battle for the Soul of the YMCA

After he moved to the Twin Cities area for graduate school, my brother
went to the local YMCA in his search for a gym.

He said that after 5 minutes in the place...he could see it was
probably was a pretty nice bath-house that just happened to be
in Minnesota, not in San Francisco.

He said that some of his work colleagues laughed when he told them
about this and said that some of the local YMCAs were "just plain gay".

This was in the early 1990s.

An appropriate response might be ... "Well, then let me ask you a question. Were you offended when the 'Piss Christ' piece was displayed in an art exhibit funded with taxpayer money? A lot of Christians were -- did you sympathise with them? If not, then we will pay the same amount of attention to you being offended as you paid to the Christians being offended by the 'Piss Christ'."

Or: "You are a hypocrite: you proclaim we should act differently when you claim to be offended, but you will not act differently when you see we are offended. So, why should I give any consideration at all when you claim to be offended?"

This removes the "I am offended" arguement.

My brother and I went to a summer camp for a week at the Y when we were young. I still remember the camp counselor giving me a bible when I left, because I didn't have one of my own, and I had a lot of questions about what she told us about it. (Born Catholic, raised without religion unfortunately.)

It's sad that people are trying to change the very foundations of the Y. That counselor had a very positive impact on me.

Yes, there are many who are offended by not being encouraged to kill your neighbor, not being encouraged to commit adultery, and not being encouraged to lie. You have a good home, along with the MSM, in the Democrat party.
