Greer slams Croc Hunter mourners as 'idiots'

STEVE Irwin had embarrassed millions of Australians, Germaine Greer said last night.
And those who had mourned him with their tributes at the Irwin family's Australia Zoo in what the British had labelled "a Princess Diana moment" were idiots, she said.
British-based Greer wrote in The Guardian newspaper after Irwin's death that the animal world had taken revenge on "self-deluded animal tormentor Steve Irwin".
Last night, she went even further.
She told Channel 9's A Current Affair she did not understand Australians' feelings of loss for Irwin.
She said he had exploited animals by telling the world how dangerous they were and then treating them disrespectfully.
"I find the whole Steve Irwin phenomenon (embarrassing) -- and I'm not the only person who did," Greer said.
But when pushed, she was unable to name anyone who had publicly agreed with her.
She rejected claims her sentiments were "un-Australian".
"I don't care what I'm being called," Greer said.
"I just hope I'm out of touch with what idiots are thinking."

"The misery of the middle-aged woman is a gray and hopeless thing, born of having nothing to live for, of disappointment and resentment at having been gypped by consumer society, and surviving merely to be the butt of its unthinking scorn."Germaine Greer
Also from your link above - she must be describing her own pitiful life....

Well, I don't think I'd go quite so far as this Greer person, but at the same rate, I could hardly say Irwin's death was anything less than fully expected.

Someone else here said it pretty well (and I'm sorry that I don't recall who you are...) something to the effect:
"A man must have done very well in life to be mourned by so many children."

No doubt, of course I have heard the same thing said of people who taunt large repriles for kicksNot doing it to taunt them but more like showing folks that animals aren't necessarily eating machines focused on our anihilation. He showed however, that although these creatures can kill, they aren't terrors and we need to have a healthy fear, not a phobia.
Many times I have used some of his shows to illustrate to my kids that they needn't be terrified of large animals, just remain observant and respectful
