Iran Unveils Locally Made Fighter Plane
Associated Press by way of Forbes ^ | 06SEP06 | NASSER KARIMI
Posted on 09/06/2006 1:45:05 AM PDT by familyop
Iran unveiled its first locally manufactured fighter plane Wednesday during large-scale military exercises, state-run television reported.
The report said the bomber Saegheh is similar to the American F-18 fighter plane, but "more powerful." It also said the plane was "designed, optimized and improved by Iranian experts."
State TV said the Iranian air force had commissioned the Saegheh plane after many test flights in the past year.
Television footage showed the airplane taking off and launching two rockets. The plane had a small cockpit and only one pilot.
"Saegheh is capable of launching both rockets and bombs," the report said.
General Karim Ghavami, commander of Iran's air force, told state-run television that the war games were being held "to show the trans-regional forces that we are ready to defend our country up to the latest drop of our blood."
The Islamic republic is concerned about the U.S. military presence in neighboring Iraq and Afghanistan at a time when the international community has threatened to impose sanctions against Tehran because of its disputed nuclear program.
During the war-games, which began Aug. 19 and have been dubbed "The Blow of Zolfaghar," Iran has test-fired short-range, surface-to-surface missiles, submarine-to-surface missiles, a new air defense system and laser bombs.
Iran's military also test-fired a series of missiles during war games in the Persian Gulf in March and April, including a missile it claimed was undetectable by radar and could use multiple warheads to hit several targets simultaneously.
After decades of relying on foreign weapons purchases, Iran now says it is increasingly self-sufficient, claiming it annually exports more than $100 million worth of military equipment to more than 50 countries.
Since 1992, Iran has produced its own tanks, armored personnel carriers and missiles, the government said. It announced in early 2005 that it had begun producing torpedoes. The government has not said how many warplanes it will build.

Ex-Sudanese Slave Recounts Horror of His Abduction and Treatment in Northern Sudan
This happened because of the Book you brought to us
By Mark Ellis
Senior Correspondent, ASSIST News Service
NEW YORK (ANS) -- As a nine-year-old boy tending his familys goats he witnessed his village burned by the Sudanese Army and many killed. Abducted and enslaved in northern Sudan less than a year later, he endured nightmarish treatment by his captors that made him feel like an animal.
Simon Deng
I had a lovely family, says Simon Deng, founder of Sudan Freedom Walk and a speaker for the American Anti-Slavery Group. (iAbolish.com) His father, a farmer in the village of Tonga, sent his children to Christian school. We witnessed houses burned down constantly by government troops from northern Sudan.
Growing up, he received an explicit warning from his parents. We were told if you see the Arab troops coming you have to run for your life, Deng recalls. Once while he tended his familys goats he heard the unmistakable rumble of German-made troop transports. When they rolled to a stop, soldiers poured out and began to burn most of the huts, kill the men, and steal any livestock they could grab.
Miraculously, Deng and his family escaped death. They decided to move to the relative safety of a larger cityMalakal, and rented a house near the Nile River. They befriended an Arab family that lived next door and the children often played together.
One day, one of the men next door announced he was traveling to northern Sudan by steamboat, and asked nine-year-old Deng to help with his suitcases. After everything was loaded, the man asked if Deng would stay and watch his luggage while he ran a quick errand in the marketplace.
Deng sat dutifully watching the mans belongings as the minutes ticked by. Suddenly the boat started to leave the dock and the man had not returned. Terrified, Deng started to cry. A few minutes laterwith the ship well underwaythe man reappeared and tried to calm the boy down.
Dont cry
its impossible to turn this boat around, he said. We have to go to the last destination in the north, where they have other boats going south. I will put you on a boat going south, he promised.
Sadly, the man deceived his young companion. He tricked me, Deng realized later. He had things in his mind I didnt know.
When the steamer arrived in Kusti, Deng discovered there were three other children on the boat abducted by the same man. He took us to his village and when we arrived everybody was very excited that he had come from the south and brought slaves.
Deng struggled to comprehend what was happening. We were confused kids, not knowing what was going on.
He gave me to one of his relatives as a gift, Deng recalls. From then on I didnt see the man again. That was the beginning of the nightmare.
After his abductor disappeared and the family tried to explain his new reality, the boy started crying. To stop me from crying they beat me up. Then they brought him a photo of a man with no legs. They showed me this in case I thought of running away, Deng says. They said they would capture me, cut my legs, and I would end up looking exactly like the man in this picture.
Beatings, threats and terror became powerful weapons of intimidation. If they called me and I didnt say yes loudly, I was beaten, Deng says. I had to say yes to everything; I forgot how to say no.
There was no running water in his new home, so one of his first duties was to fetch water from the Nile. Since they had a slave, I did the work formerly assigned to a donkey. When he lifted the water he often gave the sign of the cross, which helped him forget his pain. I was the first to get up in the morning and the last to go to bed.
The family would not let Deng eat with them. Instead, he waited until they finished, and if there were any table scraps left over, that became his meal. If there were no leftovers, he didnt eat.
I was treated worse than an animal, Deng recalls. I had to get the grass to feed the animals. I had to clean the place of the animals. I didnt have a bed, so I slept in the place of the animals.
In the midst of this inhumane treatment, his slave masters held out a carrot. They always asked me if I wanted to be treated like a human being, Deng recalls. They said if I converted to Islam I could become their son and be given an Arab name.
Afraid to say no, Deng told them he would let them know later. I was buying time, he says. The thought of converting to their faith terrified him. How could I become a Muslim and become their son when I know for sure I have a lovely mother and dad and brothers and sisters? he asked himself.
After three years of captivity, Dengs new family moved to the larger city of Kusti so their sons could attend high school. One day Deng was in the marketplace and spotted three men with tribal marks on their foreheads which indicated they were from Dengs tribe in the souththe Shilluk tribe.
Deng ran to the men and breathlessly began to explain his predicament. I threw everything at them to convince them I am a Shilluk, he says, although he didnt have the identifying marks on his forehead. (His abduction took place before this rite of passage.)
These menfrom a different village than Dengsseemed to want to believe him, but were not entirely convinced. We know someone from your village visiting Kusti, they told him. We can bring him back tomorrow to meet you.
I was disappointed and started crying, Deng recalls. With his hopes for freedom aroused, how could he wait another day? But the three Shilluk tribesmen convinced him they would keep their promise to return.
During the next 24-hours Deng wrestled with God. The light seemed to come out of nowhere
would it turn dark again? How could God show him this glimmer of hope and then abandon him?
The next day Deng went to the place they chose at the appointed time. When he saw the three Shilluks and the man they brought with them, his heart leaped. It was someone he knew from his village! He ran to the man, who looked at him incredulously, staring as if he was a ghost. The man grabbed Deng around the neck and began to hug him like the prodigals father, as tears of joy flowed copiously down their cheeks.
I thought you were dead, he exclaimed. Your father offered 10 cows as a reward for any person who could find you. After two years we assumed you werent alive.
The man, named Ajack, told Deng he would do anything to free him from slavery. They all agreed continued secrecy would be vital. If his captors discovered their meeting, Deng knew they would take him to a place he would never be found.
The next day Deng met Ajack at the docks, where the elder man purchased two southbound tickets on a steamboat. He took me back to southern Sudan where I was reunited with my family.
Today, Deng struggles to describe his homecoming, mimicking the Apostle Pauls reticence to describe his glimpse of heaven. Everyone was filled with joy, but at the same time they couldnt believe someone they thought was dead showed up in front of them, Deng recalls. Everybody was happy but everybody was crying.
When I first saw my brothers and sisters it was such a shock to me and them, he says. As word spread of the reunion, the entire village was at the familys door. It was chaos
it was a glorious day! Everyone in the village thanked God, and viewed the return as a miracle.
I was born again from the miserable life I was kept in, and returned to a family who loved me.
As life slowly returned to normal, Deng struggled to put the past behind and deal with continued fears of abduction. One of his first acts was to put the Shilluk marks on his forehead, as a reminder of his identity. Every time I thought about the past it was like a nightmare, he says. I had to forget what I went through and go on like a regular human being.
Simon Deng with President Bush
In his teens, Deng became a national swimming champion and worked as a messenger in the Sudanese parliament. Later, he emigrated to the U.S., where he currently works as a lifeguard on Coney Island. In March 2006 he started the Sudan Freedom Walk as a way to publicize continued injustices in Sudan. On the Freedom Walk, he traveled 300 miles from the U.N. headquarters in New York to the Capitol Building in Washington D.C., and had a special meeting with President Bush in the White House.
A jihad was declared against southern Sudan in 1983 against anyone who would not follow Islamic law, Deng notes. There were 2 million southern Sudanese slaughtered and 7 million refugees, he says, which created an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.
Deng faults the western press for not covering the crisis sooner. Because the Arabs were killing infidels in the name of Islam nobody wanted to talk about it, Deng notes. Their mission was to loot cattle, kill men and women, burn villages and take the young ones into slavery. Even fellow Christians didnt want to talk about it. People were afraid of being accused of being anti-Islam or anti-Arab.
As Christians, we were being slaughtered because of what we believe in, he says. When I came to this country I asked what happened to our fellow Christians. This happened to us because of the book you brought us.
Despite a peace agreement signed between northern and southern Sudan in January 2005, war continues in the Darfur region of the country, where Arab militias allied with the north engage in ethnic cleansing. The fighting has displaced hundreds of thousands, with many seeking refuge in neighboring Chad.
Its still going on today, Deng notes. They want everyone to become a Muslim, he says. The child born today in Darfur doesnt know if he or she is a Muslim and most important never committed any crime. We cant be silent as human beings when atrocities are being committed before our own eyes.
As a former victim, Deng has an acute awareness of their pain. How can I live in freedom and go to sleep at night when villages are still being burned, women raped, and kids taken into slavery?

Travel Warning
United States Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Washington, DC 20520
This information is current as of today, Wed Sep 06 2006 14:13:11 GMT-0700.
CHAD
September 06, 2006
This Travel Warning reminds American citizens of ongoing rebel activity in Chad, and notes that travelers entering Sudan by land from Chad without a visa or proper documentation run the risk of detention and arrest by Sudanese authorities. This supersedes the Travel Warning of July 6, 2006.
The Department of State continues to urge American citizens to consider carefully the risks of travel to Chad, due to continued threats of rebel activity on Chads borders with Sudan and the Central African Republic (CAR). Americans should exercise caution when traveling in Chad, including within the capital, NDjamena. Americans not affiliated with humanitarian relief efforts should avoid travel to eastern Chad and the Chad/CAR border.
U.S. citizens should avoid crowds, political rallies, street demonstrations, and government installations, including the Presidential Palace, which is across from the Parade Grounds. Vehicles should never stop in front of the Presidential Palace. When traveling anywhere in Chad, American citizens should travel in groups, keep a cell phone (for when service is available) or two-way radio in reach at all times, avoid travel after dusk, and leave detailed travel plans with a reliable point of contact. Americans traveling with Thurarya satellite phones should register the phones with Chadian authorities.
Reports indicate an increase in the number of couper de routes, or highway banditry incidents, across the country. Some American citizens have reported harassment at Chadian government roadway checkpoints. Americans are urged to carry all necessary travel documents, including valid passports and visas, and any specific documents required for travel within the country. Americans who encounter problems at these checkpoints should contact the U.S. Embassy (See below for contact details).
There have been sporadic clashes between rebel movements and government forces in eastern and southeastern Chad as well as numerous reports of cross-border banditry and cattle rustling. United Nations (UN) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) vehicles have been targeted for carjacking. At least one foreigner has been critically injured as a result of a carjacking, and another expatriate was seriously wounded during an armed robbery at an NGO compound. U.S. citizens affiliated with humanitarian relief efforts in eastern Chad are strongly urged to coordinate travel plans with UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) security offices in Abeche and NDjamena, and to follow UNHCR guidance regarding safety and security. The government of Chad requires all individuals traveling to or residing in refugee-affected areas in eastern Chad to obtain permits issued by the Ministry of Territorial Administration in NDjamena, and to register in Abeche upon arrival in eastern Chad.
For American citizens who intend to enter Sudan from Chad despite the Departments Travel Warnings for both countries, it is essential to obtain the appropriate visas and permits in advance of entry into Sudan. In August 2006, five foreigners, including two Americans, were arrested and detained in Darfur after entering Sudan via the Chadian border town of Bahai without the appropriate documentation. Several of these individuals had solicited and obtained escorts in Chad who allegedly promised to facilitate entry into Sudan, but who were ultimately unable to follow through with their commitments. Further information is available in the Departments Travel Warning for Sudan.
The influx of 12,000 Central African Republic (CAR) refugees into southern Chad, which is already home to over 40,000 refugees, following fighting between northern Central African rebels and CAR forces in July 2005, has also created a volatile situation along the Chad-CAR border. In addition, in the northern Tibesti region and the area north of Lake Chad, there have been occasional clashes between government forces and a rebel group known as the Chadian Movement for Justice and Democracy (MDJT).
The U.S. Embassy in NDjamena may close temporarily for general business from time to time to review its security posture. For the status of services, consult the Embassy web site at http://usembassy.state.gov/ndjamena.
American citizens visiting or resident in Chad are strongly encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy on line at https://travelregistration.state.gov and to provide contact information and specific travel data if traveling outside the capital. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the U.S. Embassy in NDjamena. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency and provide updates on the security situation as necessary. The U.S. Embassy is located in NDjamena on Avenue Felix Ebou; mailing address B.P. 413; telephone (including after hours): (235) 51-62-11, 51-70-09, 51-77-59, 51-90-52, 51-92-18, and 51-92-33; fax (235) 51-56-54; web site http://usembassy.state.gov/ndjamena.
For additional information, consult the Department of State's latest Consular Information Sheet for Chad and the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement at http://travel.state.gov. American citizens may also obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States and Canada, or 1-202-501-4444 from overseas.

Ahmadinejad calls on West to "follow God's path"
First he invited President Bush to convert to Islam; now Ahmadinejad is extending that invitation to Westerners in general, with the threat that "those who do not respond to the invitation (to follow God's will), as we said, will have no good fate."
From Reuters: "Iran president urges West to follow God's path"
TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a devout Shi'ite Muslim, urged the West on Wednesday to turn to God's path and said failure to do would ensure they faced "no good fate."
Ahmadinejad, whose speeches are often peppered with religious and anti-Western remarks, also repeated a call for a live television debate with George W. Bush and said Iran was not a threat, rebuffing Tuesday's comments by the U.S. president.
[...]
"We requested a face-to-face debate (with Bush) to assess the problems of the world ... We will let humanity choose between us," he told a meeting on the 12th Muslim Shi'ite imam, who disappeared in the 10th century AD but who Shi'ites believe will return to implement Islamic justice.
"We oppose the fact that America and Britain intend to impose themselves on every other nation," he said.
"Those who do not respond to the invitation (to follow God's will), as we said, will have no good fate," said Ahmadinejad, the second non-cleric to be president of the Islamic Republic.
"I do not threaten anybody, but the whole universe threatens you. The current of life in the universe opposes you, as it opposes tyranny," he added.
A presidential official told Reuters that Ahmadinejad's remarks were partly to rebut Bush's speech on Tuesday in which he said Shi'ite "extremists" were subjecting Iran to "a regime of tyranny," backed terrorists, sought atomic bombs and threatened the United States.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said Bush was trying to cover up his failures. "We don't know why Mr Bush insists so much on using this odd language in international relations," he said in a statement.
In letters Ahmadinejad wrote this year to Bush and to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, he blamed many of the world's problems on leaders who failed to follow divine teachings.
"The time has passed for the use of force ... All of the discrimination, wars and problems have a root in such an arrogant spirit, the idea of 'Mahdaviat' opposes that school of thought," Ahmadinejad said.
Mahdaviat refers to the concept of belief in the Mahdi.
Ahmadinejad has often referred to the return of the 12th Imam, also known as the Mahdi, in his speeches since taking office last year, including a speech to the United Nations last September that perplexed many diplomats in the audience.
Ahmadinejad's fervent belief in the Mahdi has unnerved some observers, because they say one school of thought, based around the secretive Hojjatieh Society, believes the 12th Imam's return will be hastened by the creation of chaos on earth.

It is my understanding Toronto has one of the largest "ethnic" areas in all of Canada, noting:
Snip: Canadian government, law enforcement and intelligence officials are quite aware of the extent of the Tamil rebel network in Canada, and claim that those who are still active are using the country as a base for intelligence-gathering and raising money for arms shipments. Said one law enforcement official who insisted on anonymity: "I'm amazed that there are so many people who have been trained by a group that our government says is a terrorist organization, and we're letting them in. I just can't believe how stupid we are."
