In the five years since terrorists flew hijacked airliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Americans have accepted inconvenience, sacrificed personal liberties and paid billions of dollars for a security clampdown that touches virtually every aspect of their lives.

And we're still not safe.

Police Investigate Pullen Park Derailment (NC)

(09/05/06 -- RALEIGH) - The popular train ride at Raleigh's Pullen Park is the focus of a police investigation.

A few children were hurt and the conductor had to go to the hospital after the accident.
State ride inspectors will investigate, but police say the derailment was no accident. Investigators want to question a young man seen in a photograph about Sunday's derailment of the kiddie train. (snip)

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "RALEIGH -- After several ducks died at Raleigh's popular Pullen Park, the city says it launched an investigation and autopsies on the ducks. The preliminary results seem to show that the ducks died from botulism, but the park service is still investigating. The park is located between Western Boulevard and Hillsborough Street."


ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A serum sample obtained from one of the affected ducks is being sent to another laboratory for confirmation. A final report is expected within three weeks. The water quality and health of the wildlife will continue to be monitored and access to the water will remain closed to the public, says the city."

Transmitter Was In 'On' Position


WASHOUGAL, Wash. -- The search for a downed plane is over after search and rescue teams find the emergency transmitter that was emitting the signal but no plane.
The emergency transmitter was found in the attic of a shed on a rural piece of property on Northeast Winters Road, about nine miles north of Washougal.

The emergency signal was first picked up by Virginia authorities around 9 p.m. Monday. They then contacted Clark County Search and Rescue and a search was launched.

An Oregon Air National Guard helicopter joined the search Tuesday morning. An antenna and a signal finder were used on the ground. As ground searchers moved up a remote road near Jones Creek trailhead they tracked the signal to the shed.

The transmitter, which looks a lot like a brick of Tillamook cheese, was switched into the "on" position. When the transmitter is in a plane it is put in the "arm" position, but the one found Tuesday was in the "on" position.(snip)

According to the FBI, Maati, also known as Amro Badr Eldin Abou, says he has Egyptian and Syrian roots, but was born in Kuwait in 1966. Maati has Canadian citizenship and is a licensed pilot, the FBI has said.

I wonder if anything looks out of place on that Kuwaiti birth certificate?
