Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - September 2006

Posted on 09/01/2006 8:57:29 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Five Years Later, We're Still Not Safe
-Full Story-

In the five years since terrorists flew hijacked airliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Americans have accepted inconvenience, sacrificed personal liberties and paid billions of dollars for a security clampdown that touches virtually every aspect of their lives.

And we're still not safe.

A close examination of the federal government's homeland security effort shows that there have been major accomplishments since the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. But it also reveals how vulnerable the nation remains to catastrophe.

Thanks for the ping. I don't think the airlines would let us know if Muslims were headed out but that's just a guess.

"West Bank Churches Burned in Light of Muslim Anger Over Papal Comments"
Sunday, September 17, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "NABLUS, West Bank — Two West Bank churches were set afire early Sunday as a wave of Muslim anger over comments by Pope Benedict XVI construed as anti-Islam grew throughout the Palestinian areas.

In the West Bank town of Tulkarem, a stone church built 170 years ago was torched before dawn and its entire inside was destroyed, local Christian officials said. In the village of Tubas, a small church was attacked with firebombs and partially burned, Christians said. Neither church is Catholic, the officials said.

On Saturday, Muslims hurled firebombs and opened fire at five churches in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to protest the pope's comments, sparking concerns of a rift between Palestinian Muslims and Christians."

Israeli-US plot behind pope's remarks: Iran hardline press

Well, we should have known all along: the Zionists are behind Pope Benedict's remarks! Of course! From AFP, with thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist:

Iranian hardline newspapers said there were signs of an Israeli-US plot behind remarks by Pope Benedict XVI that linked Islam to violence and created a wave of anger across the Muslim world.
The daily Jomhuri Islami said Israel and the United States -- the Islamic republic's two arch-enemies -- could have dictated the comments to distract attention from the resistance of the Shiite militant group Hezbollah to Israel's offensive on Lebanon.

"The reality is that if we do not consider Pope Benedict XVI to be ignorant of Islam, then his remarks against Islam are a dictat that the Zionists and the Americans have written (for him) and have submitted to him."

"The American and the Zionist aim is to undermine the glorious triumph of Islam's children of Lebanese Hezbollah, which annulled the undefeatable legend of the Israeli army and foiled the Satanic and colonialist American plot," it said.

Nuns retreat from Somalia for safety

Sep. 28, 1998

VATICAN (CWNews.com) -- A community of Catholic nuns has left Mogadishu, Somalia, to seek safe haven in Kenya, the Italian missionary agency MISNA has announced.

The nuns have left a hospital in Mogadishu, where they worked as volunteers, after one member of their community was taken hostage by a military faction. The nuns hope to return as soon as the situation is stabilized, and their own safety can be assured.

"Gunmen shoot elderly nun dead"
From correspondents in Mogadishu, Somalia

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "UNIDENTIFIED gunmen shot and killed an elderly Italian nun at a hospital in the Islamist-controlled Somali capital, witnesses and medical workers said.

The attackers entered the Austrian-funded SOS Hospital in southern Mogadishu's Huriwa District and opened fire, killing the nun before escaping in the ensuing confusion, they said.

“They came into the compound and shot the nun and then ran away,” one medical worker said."

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "On Friday, a prominent hardline Mogadishu cleric called for Muslims to “hunt down” and kill the pontiff for his remarks.

“Whoever offends our Prophet Mohammed should be killed on the spot by the nearest Muslim,” Sheikh Abubukar Hassan Malin told worshippers at a mosque in southern Mogadishu.

“We call on all Islamic communities across the world to take revenge on the baseless critic called the Pope,” he said."

Convert from Islam to Christianity killed in Somalia

By Michael Ireland
Special Correspondent, ASSIST News Service

MOGADISHU, SOMALIA (ANS) -- Somali Christian sources report that Ali Mustaf Maka'il, a 22-year-old college student and cloth merchant, who converted from Islam to Christianity eleven months ago, was shot and killed in the Manabolyo quarter of Mogadishu on September 7.
According to a report from The Barnabas Fund, quoting a Christian source inside Somalia, the gunman was loyal to the Union of Islamic Courts (ICU), the Islamist organization that took power in Mogadishu in early June 2006 and now controls much of southern Somalia.

The report states: "The gunman shot Ali in the back after he refused to join a crowd chanting Qur'an verses in honor of the lunar eclipse. (Solar and lunar eclipses are significant in Islam and are accompanied by special congregational prayers.) The ICU confiscated his body for 24 hours before delivering it to the grieving family."

The Barnabas Fund says: "It seems that under the new Islamist rulers, who include hard-line jihadi elements, the tragic history of persecution and martyrdom for Somalia's tiny Christian community is set to continue and most likely to worsen."

The group reports that in July 2006 there were unconfirmed reports that three Christians had been shot and killed by Islamists as they returned home from a prayer meeting.

It adds: "In October 2005 an evangelist and house church leader, Osman Sheik Ahmed, was shot dead by Islamist radicals. Children of Christian Somali refugees in Kenya have been kidnapped by Muslim relatives and taken to Islamic institutions in Somalia for 'rehabilitation.' "

The Barnabas Fund explains that the leader of the ICU, Hassan Dahir Aweys, promised to implement shari'a in all areas he controls.

"According to shari'a, apostates (those who leave Islam for another religion), must be killed. ICU leaders have even threatened to kill as apostates Muslims who are lax in their prayers, claiming this is commanded by shari'a. Several Muslims have been publicly flogged for drug related offences since the ICU took control."

The Barnabas Fund report states that more then 99.5 percent of Somalis are Muslims and regard Christianity as a foreign religion of their historic enemies in Ethiopia and of their former colonial masters the Italians and the British.

It adds: "There is a long history of conflict between Muslim Somalis and Christian Ethiopians, so anti-Christian sentiment runs deep. Most Somalis take it for granted that a true Somali is a Muslim and converts to Christianity must be traitors. These prejudices, widely held by Muslim Somalis, seem to used to justify violence against Christians, both indigenous and expatriate.

"The US-led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq and the recent Israeli campaign against Hizbullah in Lebanon have fuelled and inflamed the inherent hostility to the West and to Christians."

Further heads up to the Shukrijumah alert, from the article:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He is also quoted as saying the next attack in America will not be conducted by people like Atta.
"We have a different plan for the next attack," he told Mir. "You will see. Americans will hardly find out any Muslim names, after the next attack. Most of our brothers are living in Western countries, with Jewish and Christian names, with passports of Western countries. This time, someone with the name of Mohamed Atta will not attack inside America, it would be some David, Richard or Peter."
He said there will be another audio message from bin Laden aired within the next two weeks.
Mir reportedly interviewed Dawood Sept. 12 at the tomb of Sultan Mehmud Ghaznawi on the outskirts of Kabul. Dawood and the al-Qaida leaders who accompanied him were clean-shaven and dressed as Western reporters. The al-Qaida commander had contacted Mir by cell phone to arrange the meeting.
"You have witnessed the brutality of the Israelis in the recent 34-day war against Lebanese civilians," said Dawood. "9/11 was a revenge of Palestinian children, killed by the U.S.-made weapons, supplied to Israel.
The next attack on America would be a revenge of Lebanese children killed by U.S.-made cluster bombs. Bush and (British Prime Minister Tony) Blair are the Crusaders, and Muslim leaders, like (Pakistani President Pervez) Musharraf and (Afghani President Hamid) Karzai are their collaborators. We will teach a lesson to all of them."
JMO of course, but the hygiene of the folks working on these farms is not the greatest.
They are going to have to get a handle on it otherwise the produce farmers are going to go broke. I certainly will not buy bagged lettuce etc.......We may have to start our victory gardens again.
I agree with you 100%.
Also now, when something doesn't taste right to me (especially fresh produce); I just toss it. The frugal person in me doesn't like that; but the health conscious side, does.
No problem with the links...just wanted to post them there, especially a Google one I picked up for update.
OPINION: Right...apparently (according to news reports I have seen); at first, the source of the problem couldn't be identified, but then the fresh spinach WAS identified, but then the investigators/agencies weren't sure where the spinach came from, but decided to put out the warning bulletins, anyway.
Baghdad Bomb Kills U.S. Soldier; Enemy Mosque Use Increases
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Sept. 17, 2006 – An American soldier was killed Sept. 15 when the vehicle he was traveling in was struck by a roadside bomb south of Baghdad, according to U.S. officials.
The soldier’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
And, for the third time in four days, the enemy used mosques to launch attacks on Iraqi and U.S. security forces, U.S. officials reported.
Soldiers from the 4th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, reported being attacked Sept. 16 by small-arms fire from the Genet al Meawa Mosque, south of Baghdad, near Mahmudiyah. Soldiers from Multinational Division Baghdad’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, moved into the area to support the besieged Iraqis.
Terrorists in Baghdad also fired at Iraqi security forces and U.S. soldiers from mosques twice before in recent days, on Sept. 12 and 13, officials said.
“We want to remind the Iraqi people that while U.S. soldiers respect the sanctity of mosques, those religious sites lose their protected status when terrorists use them in order to attack Iraqi security and coalition forces,” Brig. Gen. David Halverson, deputy commanding general for support, Multinational Division Baghdad, said.
Terrorists also have been using Baghdad-area holy sites as bases for storing weapons and bomb-making materials and to hold death squad meetings, Halverson said.
And, Iraqi soldiers, police and a U.S. bomb-disposal unit teamed up Sept. 15 to eliminate an improvised explosive device threat in the town of Arab Jabur, south of Baghdad.
Iraqi national policemen responded to a report of an IED placed on a road near Arab Jabur and cordoned off the area. An EOD team arrived on the scene and conducted a controlled detonation to eliminate the threat.
U.S. soldiers also discovered a large munitions cache during a cordon-and-search operation conducted in northeast Baghdad Sept. 14. Soldiers from Company B, 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, discovered 42 155 mm rounds buried in an industrial dump. An EOD team blew up the confiscated munitions.
Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers also found another weapons cache in northeast Baghdad the same day. That cache contained 30 artillery rounds ranging in size from 122 mm to 155 mm. They disposed of the captured ordnance.
Since Sept. 14, Iraqi security forces and U.S. soldiers in Baghdad have cleared more than 55,500 buildings, including 60 mosques and 50 muhallas, detained more than 90 terrorist suspects, seized more than 1,200 weapons, registered over 780 weapons and found 33 weapons caches.
The combined forces also have replaced more than 1,100 doors, 35 windows and 1,350 locks damaged during clearing operations and removed more than 110,000 cubic meters of trash from the streets of Baghdad.
(Compiled from Multinational Corps Iraq and Multinational Division Iraq press releases.)
I have not purchased the "pre-packaged" salad mixes for about two years. They just never smelled quite right to me. I much prefer buying the whole heads of Romaine and spinach. I'm even worrying about those now......and we eat fresh salad every evening.
On another topic......RR, Jr. just returned from Istanbul. Said it was more tense there than he has ever seen it. This was his sixth trip in the past two years. Except for his two visits to wood products plants, he stayed in his hotel. He specifically requested a room "off street". A wise decision, I think. Said he would not be going back until things calm down. Our son and my husband frequently travel to places I won't go. I usually stay home and pray alot. We just returned from a ten day business trip to Latvia and Lithuania. No problems there. They are trying very hard to restrict the Muslim immigration that is so common in most of Europe right now. There, they feel the same way we do about the Muslims.
Ready to settle down and enjoy my beautiful Black Hills for a few months.
Yes the bagged lettuce does smell funny.
I buy the plastic boxes of baby spinach here, but not any more.
I'm happy to hear your RR Jr will be staying home for now. I think the muslims are itching for a bigger fight and they just may get their wish.
PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
This information is current as of today, Sun Sep 17 2006 19:21:17 GMT-0700.
Turkey
August 29, 2006
This Public Announcement alerts Americans to the continuing potential for terrorist actions against civilians in Turkey and notes recent incidents in areas frequented by tourists. This Public Announcement expires on November 1, 2006.
Between August 25th and August 28th, seven bombings occurred in the principal tourist areas of Turkey, injuring as many as 60 or more persons, including foreign tourists, and killing three Turkish nationals. These explosions occurred in Istanbul, Adana, and in Marmaris and Antalya in southwestern Turkey. The Kurdistan Freedom Falcons, also known by the Kurdish acronym TAK, have claimed responsibility for many of the explosions. The TAK, believed to be an affiliate of the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), a terror organization, also reiterated a public warning to foreign tourists not to visit Turkey.
The Department of State advises U.S. citizens traveling or residing in Turkey to exercise caution, and to closely follow media reports. Terrorists do not distinguish between official and civilian targets. These may include facilities where Americans and other foreigners are known to live, congregate, shop, or visit, especially hotels, clubs, restaurants, shopping centers, housing compounds, transportation systems, places of worship, schools, outdoor recreation events, or resorts and beaches. U.S. citizens should remain in a heightened state of personal security awareness when attendance at such locations is unavoidable. U.S. citizens also should avoid areas where crowds are expected to gather, as even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence.
U.S. citizens living or traveling in Turkey are encouraged to register with the Embassy or nearest consulate through the State Department's travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov, and to obtain updated information on travel and security within Turkey. U.S. citizens without Internet access may register at the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, at the Consulate General in Istanbul, at the Consulate in Adana, or with the Consular Agent in Izmir to obtain updated information on travel and security in Turkey. Embassy communications with the resident American citizen community, or "Warden Messages," can be found on the Embassy's website at http://ankara.usembassy.gov.
For the latest security information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov, where the current Worldwide Cautions, Public Announcements, and Travel Warnings can be found. Travelers should also consult the Department of State’s latest Consular information Sheet for Turkey. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S., or, for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).
The U.S. Embassy in Ankara is located at 110 Ataturk Boulevard, tel: (90) (312) 455-5555, fax (90)(312) 468-6131. The Internet address is http://ankara.usembassy.gov.
