Night all
if you like, i'll send you the one on the USA box.
Do we ever, and it's my favorite. My sainted grandmother made the best coconut cake in history.
Corn bread was common in the west where I grew up in the 1930's.
You know, the Pepperige Farm frozen Coconut cake is delicious.
I grew up in Cleveland extreme East Midwest, not common, but I do like it. I like it with sweet potato pie and fried okra. LOL

This thread makes me want to EAT something.
LOL, I hear you!
terrible time of the night to talk about food!
My old school recipe for scones which is a tried and tested one.
8oz Self Raising flour (you can use plain with baking powder and soda if you so wish but I usually use SR)
1/2 leve teaspoon salt
1 1/2 oz marg
1 1/2 oz sugar
1oz dried fruit (currants or white raisins) or 2oz Cheese (optional) If you use cheese omit the sugar as well
1/4 pint milk
Oven temp 450 or gas mark 8
1) Sieve flour and salt into mixing bowl
2) Cut the marg into small pieces and add to flour
3) Rub in fat until the mixture looks like bread crumbs (like your coffee cake recipe). A good tip here is to lift your finger out of the bowl as you are doing this to get the air in.
4) Add sugar and fruit (fruit optional) or omit sugar and add cheese.
5) Using one hand collect the mixture and knead lightly to form a smooth and fairly soft dough
6) Turn out onto a floured top and roll out until 3/4 inch thick
7) Cut into rounds and place on baking and brush light with milk or egg. If cheese scones sprinkle with grated cheese after brushing with egg or milk.
8) Bake towards the top of the oven for 10 - 15 minutes
9) Remove from oven and place on a cooling tray until cool. Sieve split in half and buttered. If plain scones (no fruit or cheese) serve with jam and cream.
***make that anything***
LOL! I never noticed your typo until you corrected it, and then I burst out laughing.
Just the thought of him spoils my moment. ;*)
that would be alot of recipes...everyone has their own and they all thinks it the best! Have you ever crunched corn chips on put them on the bottom of your bowl, then the chili, then shreaded cheese on top?
I wonder if it is the same in the US as England or if we are talking about a different recipe I will freep you mine tomorrow.
couldn't believe i didn't catch that until after i posted!!!
Well, I'll have to try the bologna recipe since my hubby loves bologna better than anything. We have what he calls, "The Big Bologna Blowout" once a year and have tons of people over. Fried Bologna, Bologna sandwiches, and chips of all sorts, plus desserts. Everyone gets such a charge out of it. The Bologna sloppy joes will be a great addition to the party.
There is much canola oil in store bought prepared foods because it has a "good reputation" and it is cheap. I suspect that the reputation has been bought and paid for by some large agribusinesses, as has the reputation of many soy and corn based products.
For that matter, I can't say that I trust Snopes.com much either. I haven't made a careful study of them, but my recollection is that the last couple of times they've crossed my path, they seemed to be on the wrong side of it.
I've changed my diet in the last six months radically, including replacing the prepared light oils I list above with flax, coconut, olive, cod liver, krill, borage, meat, fish, peanut and -raw- milk. I continue not to exercise any whatsoever (not that I recommend that), and I make no effort to reduce my caloric intake.
In that six months:
Really - diet makes a difference. There is *alot* of confusing and intentionally incorrect information out there. There is some *serious* big time money pushing what's profitable over what's healthy. This has been going on at least since the replacement of butter with margarine a half century ago. Neither the AMA nor the FDA are trustworthy sources in this confusion, nor are many of the bigger universities.
It's not just the oils that I've changed. It's also a radical reduction in refined carbohydrates, elimination of canned sodas (Coke and such) and the addition of a bunch of various vitamin and nutrient pills. Unlike most people on this fine Dose (and on this fine planet) I'm only mildly interested in the food I eat, and am quite content to consume fist fills of pills.
But the change in oils and the reduction in refined carbs are a big part of it that I would recommend even for people with more ordinary tastes in food.
Our modern day diets have too much Omega 6 oil (the light oils derived from plants) and not enough Omega 3 oil. These are the two kinds of polyunsaturated essential fatty acids. We need to look for ways to increase the balance toward Omega 3 oil, and we need to treat both these types of oils carefully, as they are easy to harm with heat and go rancid easily. Canola does have both Omega 6 and 3 oils, but more Omega 6, while our diets are usually Omega 3 deficient. I'd avoid Canola in any prepared food (such as bottled salad dressings, margarine's, baked goods) as it will almost certainly be overheated, forming transfatty acids.
Saturated fats have gotten a bum rap.
Now I am really off night all
night!
