Alaska Republican Ted Stevens admitted Wednesday that he used a parlaimentary maneuver to secretly block legislation that would open federal spending practices to public scrutiny.
Stevens used a procedure known as a "secret hold" to derail the legislation, which was introduced by Sens. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) and Barack Obama (D-Ill.), said Aaron Saunders, a spokesman for Stevens.
Speculation over who placed the hold on the measure, which would create a searchable database of $2.5 trillion in government contracts, grants, insurance, loans, and financial assistance, has been swirling around Capital Hill as well as the blogosphere.

Geez. It's a sad day when Obama is in favor of a bill to require more transparency in fed largesse, and a Republican is against it. What is this world coming to?
That was what I was thinking...
It'll be even sadder if he ever becomes President, which is what this vote was about for him anyway.
Now we know.
And that is the difference between the DBM with dems and the DBM with Republicans.
Hate it was him.
So, has he learned anything? Will he support it now?
I couldn't agree more! I think it has to be done through the state rather than Washington??!!
That was what I was thinking...
No payback for blocking the $200 million "bridge to nowhere" in Alaska. I commented on this in post #28.
I had to register and log in to even FIND it.
I saw it in today's paper, and had to register to even FIND it online.
Thanks for posting it, anyway. I was wondering who put that hold on the bill. My guess is that Stevens is stinging from the treatment that he got over the bridge and thinks that the opposition will use the web site to mischaracterize everything that the other party requests.
The same as any other Sen. - from any state.
2008
It seems like the GOP office holders these days are either corrupt, too stupid not to make remarks that will come back to bite them, RINOs, or political whores.
Maybe it's time for ol' farts like Stevens of Alaska and Burns of Montana, who are so out of touch they couldn't figure out how to scratch their own a**, to go on out to pasture.
No wonder people get turned off with the political system. No wonder people are disinterested and don't even bother to vote. There's not a dime's worth of difference between the the Dems and most Pubbies. When you've got Freepers supporting John McCain and Rudy Giuliani, the conservatives of this nation may as well put our heads between our legs and kiss our butts good-bye.
83 years old and mean and nasty!
lol, well, you were right! Byrd had the other hold. :)
These two thieves of senators are nothing more than common criminals.
