Republicans have moved closer to the Democrats in a congressional voter-preference poll just as the election campaigns near the official Labor Day starting gate.
The surprising findings in a little-noticed Gallup Poll that were ignored by most of the national news media shows the Democrats barely leading the Republicans by just two points -- 47 percent to 45 percent.
After months of generic polling numbers by Gallup and others showing the GOP lagged far behind the Democrats by a seemingly insurmountable nine to 10 points, the titanic political battle for control of Congress is virtually dead even. This means we may not experience the feared Category 5 political storm some election analysts have forecast that would topple the GOP's House majority and cut deeply into its grip on the Senate.
The venerable and respected Gallup organization, which did the poll for USA Today, said the GOP's unexpected rise in the polls "represents the Republicans' best performance in a single poll during the 2006 election cycle on this important measure of electoral strength."
In an analysis accompanying its findings last week, Gallup said, "The Republican increase does appear to be significant."

Lamont could be to the Dems what Stalingrad was to the Germans.
Oh how much fun would it be on election night to once again watch the MSM having to explain how the Dems blew it.
It was the first time it had happened I believe since 1934.
I think it'll be a squeaker but we'll hold on to Congress.
I knew it was a long time but did not realize it was that long. Good. We can't let our guard down but I'm hoping we have a repeat. Thanks for the information.
If the Dems fail to understand this then they're in even bigger trouble.
The moonbats will conclude that the Dems haven't moved far enough to the left.
Let's not forget that the Dems picked up seats in 1998. So in the last two mid term elections the party of the President has picked up seats.
I think the Republicans have a lot of work to do especially showing how great the economy is going.
They will also try and scare people with the vast right wing CHRISTIAN conspiracy. Look for stupid quotes from religious people reported over and over and out of context.
I disagree..........IF the repubs show up at the polls, it will not even be close
I saw a financial program yesterday were they were discussion the possibility of a recession next year (et tu Fox).
I think the party will finally self destruct.......and it will be ripe for a takeover, maybe by the conservatives.......
I think that's what shocked the Dems and the MSM in '04. The heavy GOP turnout.

They need to frame the debate on national security and keep the Dems on the defensive.
---
They should also frame it on taxes and the revenue it generated and the fact that the DEMs want to take the tax breaks away from middle class America. Contray to LIBs, the middle class enjoyed huge tax breaks and everyone got a 2.5% reduction in the marginal tax rate. We could tear them up with their lies that "only the rich got tax breaks!"
and if they think we are just going to go away this election, they are nuts.
It may very well lead to an all out civil war which will be fought out in the primaries.
Why would the democrat party that aligned itself with Saddam, Chirac, Zarqawi, Bin Laden, Hezbullah, Hamas, NABLA, Iran, and the ACLU be surprised at these results?
They didn't get their message out (Bush lied, we hate Bush), they didn't connect with "values" voters, Republicans suppressed the black vote, Rove controls the voting machines. Bwhahahah. Get out and vote, everybody, this November. DO NOT STAY HOME. I find it amusing that Nancy Pelosi is clearly so gosh awful that she will be a huge motivator for Pubbie voters.
