Webb Ahead of Allen in Latest Poll (47.9% - 46.6% = Load of Zogby Macaca)

WASHINGTON -- The Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Virginia has pulled ahead of his incumbent opponent.

According to an independent Wall Street Journal/Zogby poll, Jim Webb is leading over Republican Senator George Allen.

The poll puts Webb at 47.9 percent and Allen at 46.6 percent.

The new poll shows a 12 point swing since mid-July, when Zogby had Senator Allen leading over Webb by 11 points.

The Wall Street Journal reports that John Zogby attributes the swing to comments that Allen made on August 11.

During a campaign rally, Allen called a rival campaign worker of Indian descent "macaca," which is a word that refers to a genus of monkeys, but can also be considered an insult.

Video of the event was posted online, and Allen was criticized for his behavior.

Allen said he had made up the word and later apologized.

The poll was conducted from August 15 - 21 and has a margin of error of 3.2 percent.

webb could have been a hero by working within the Republican Party.

Instead he sold out for opportunism and turned traitor.

Sure, sure...but I still waiting to hear about your service in combat.

From my viewpoint, somebody who has really risked his life many times for his country and saved many others - and been wounded repeatedly - gets to have any viewpoint he wants. He earned it.

If somebody wants to attack a man like that he'd better have been though exactly the same experience - or just keep the foul calumnies to himself, in a manly fashion.

Your wartime service?

I don't agree with Jim Webb's choice of party and I don't agree with his position on the war in Iraq, but he's a far better man than the one he's opposing (a football player?)and a far better man than those of you that never darkened the door of a recruiting center during time of war.

I don't question Webb's military service. I do seriously question his current judgment and his "qualifications" to be a U.S. Senator.

However, you are far to quick to get snarky about the "football player."

Yes, Allen played in college, but a knee injury kept him from trying to go further. He still loves the game.

As for military service, Allen had college deferment and a very high draft number (I believe above 300). The draft ended in 1973. Allen graduated from college in 1974.

He has never, ever criticized Webb's military service.

That said, George Allen has served with distinction in the Virginia House of Delegates, the U.S. Congress, as Governor of Virginia and now as U.S. Senator.

And, unlike Jim Webb, he has never advocated retreat.

webb will vote to organize the Senate with the democrats, and put people like kennedy in charge of committees==traitor.

webb will vote against confirming conservative judges to the federal courts==traitor.

webb will vote for expanding social welfare programs and against extending tax cuts==socialist.

Real Americans who want to go into politics do so as conservative, patriotic Americans. Consider Van Taylor, in contrast to webb

So, those of us who haven't served can never criticize someone who has served in combat?

For anything?

Just askin'.

Webb's military service doesn't make him immune from criticism.

Webb's a lowlife, commie Rat who shouldn't get elected trash collector.

You can defend him all you want, but you are doing exactly what John Kerry and Max Cleland did when people challenged them on the ISSUES and FACTS - hide behind the uniform and use strawman arguments on those who didn't serve.

You should be ashamed of yourself...

I wish webb had worked within the GOP to resolve his differences with it.

I really do.

That's what Ronnie would have wanted.

Ronnie is crying tonight about webb's treachery.

"I don't question Webb's military service. I do seriously question his current judgment and his "qualifications" to be a U.S. Senator"

No you, can't: his service during the Vietnam War is second to none. As far as his political qualifications go, he has held appointed office on two occasions and served on both occasions with honor.

I do have trouble with people who hide behind their draft number, however - we had a fight going; the real men joined and didn't wait to see if someone else would be stuck. Allen picked football instead of fighting with the real "first team".

Whatever his politics now, Jim Webb was a member of good standing of the best team in the world.

There's a time for kid games and there's a time to put your life on the line for your country. The two don't compare.

Well, thanks for the answer and your service to our country.

We'll have to disagree beyond that.

(there's a time for kid games)

There's a time to choose the conservative, patriotic American party and a time to choose the socialist traitor party.

You can't have it both ways.

Sure, sure - and your time in combat was when..?

I enlisted in the Navy in August of 1990 and was scheduled to go to the Gulf but was discharged due to an eye condition. Not that it's relevant to the thread or answers your ridiculous strawman arguments.

But if you enjoy beating your chest over someone's military service, or whatever body part your currently beating, go for it.

"So, those of us who haven't served can never criticize someone who has served in combat? For anything? Just askin'."

Criticizing a man's politics are fair game. Disagreeing with his opinions is the center of free discourse.

Calling a man a "traitor" that has really risked everything he had when a whole bunch of his countrymen wouldn't, is disgusting, unmanly, and anything but patriotic.

We denizens of this website need to adopt a higher standard than we have. Using foul vitriol against a real hero like Jim Webb is a true low point for fellow conservatives.

My point is, if you do want to attack a man who has a history like Jim Webb, you had better have been exactly where he was - or else, shut up and vote.

He earned his right to his opinions in his own blood.

webb has ceased being a hero.

He has gone over to the enemy side.

Don't you get that?

webb raised hands at a Virginia rally with the communist traitor john kerry, who gave aid and comfort to the enemy in Vietnam.

Didn't you see that?

Criticizing a man's politics are fair game.

Uh, that's what we've been doing but you've been busy twisting it around as attacking Webb's honorable military service.
