Webb Ahead of Allen in Latest Poll (47.9% - 46.6% = Load of Zogby Macaca)

WASHINGTON -- The Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Virginia has pulled ahead of his incumbent opponent.

According to an independent Wall Street Journal/Zogby poll, Jim Webb is leading over Republican Senator George Allen.

The poll puts Webb at 47.9 percent and Allen at 46.6 percent.

The new poll shows a 12 point swing since mid-July, when Zogby had Senator Allen leading over Webb by 11 points.

The Wall Street Journal reports that John Zogby attributes the swing to comments that Allen made on August 11.

During a campaign rally, Allen called a rival campaign worker of Indian descent "macaca," which is a word that refers to a genus of monkeys, but can also be considered an insult.

Video of the event was posted online, and Allen was criticized for his behavior.

Allen said he had made up the word and later apologized.

The poll was conducted from August 15 - 21 and has a margin of error of 3.2 percent.

It's an insult to legitimate polling outfits everywhere to refer to anything Zogby puts out as a "poll"

Zogby internet polls = garbage.

Rasmussen shows the race tightening, but Zogby is the joke of the polling industry.

Zogby?! Is this the same ''reliable'' Zogby that had Lurch leading in the polls nearly every day in the run up to the 2004 election?

Another Zogby Internet poll. Doubt this is accurate to within 5 points.

However, SurveyUSA has Allen up 3, and Rasmussen has him up 5. That's a big swing from earlier in the summer.

My best guess is that Allen leads by 4 (and given the "scandal" whose effects will soon be diminishing), 4 points maybe be Allen's low-water mark. Expect him to win by about 7 or 8.

August polling = worthless. More affluent voters are traveling and normal middle class voters are busy with back to school. Let's see where this stands after Labor Day. Even if it holds up, it won't for long. This isn't the kind of gaffe with lasting value in terms of voter's perceptions. Of course the idiots in the media will keep beating the drum while ignoring Hillary and Biden mocking all Asian Indians as being convenience store clerks.

Looks to me like it's well within the margin of error.

FWIW - I finally saw the "Macaca" thing this weekend. This is the biggest, trumped up, phony story I have ever seen!

As you probably know, I'm the furthest thing from a GOP apologist and will vote 3rd party if given the option, but this story really steams me.

Do I think it's a RINO conspiracy to kneecap the most viable conservative in '08?

Yes.
