Passengers on O’Hare flight evacuated

Passengers on a United Airlines flight at O’Hare International Airport were evacuated due to "fumes or smoke" in the aircraft early Sunday morning.

Flight 525 from Boston to Chicago landed on time at 7:17 a.m. with fumes or smoke in the aircraft, according to Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

The plane landed safely, it deployed a chute and the people slid out, he said.

Fifty-eight people refused transport. The only reported injury was a sprained ankle from going down the shoot, Langford said.

The aircraft was an Airbus 320, he said.

An EMS Plan 1, still and box stand by alarm was called.

No further information was immediately available.

I became frightened once on a plane because smoke was pouring out of the overhead blower mid-flight. Turns out it was just the de-icer "burning off" according to the FA.

I think, as if anyone really cares, that what we are seeing is result of a system that is operating way too near capacity for too long. Whether it's a water pump or your heart a given pump is designed and built for operating at a certain level. If you run it at higher levels all the time something's gotta give. The airlines are under pressure from every side. There's not a single facet of the industry's day-to-day demands that's not been operating at above the ideal level for a long time. If it's not fuel costs, it's security. If it's not labor cost, it's labor discontent. The list goes on and on. And the more complex a system is the less able it is to continue to operate when parts of it are being severely stressed.

This particular case doesn't have anything to do with Muslims(for now). Fires sometimes do happen on board.

This stuff happens all the time. I was on a flight that was a hour out when they turned around and came back to our originating airport due to a crack in the cockpit windshield. (My wife was tracking me and freaked when she saw the U-turn)

It is just that nowadays if anything happens some media arm reports it and everyone goes temporarily nuts.
